But if you just want something plush, luxurious and a bit different, this introductory model certainly has its lures.

I've always wanted Maserati to make awesome cars again and now, it seems, it finally is

Ultimately, I’m pleased to see Maserati break its streak of sad, overpriced “also-ran” cars and offer something extremely competitive in an already competitive market segment. The Grecale Trofeo isn’t perfect, and there’s still some Italian quirk here, but that’s part of its considerable charm and doesn’t detract from the overall experience of driving it. If the Grecale is indicative of Maserati’s approach going forward, then it has me incredibly excited to spend some time with the new GranTurismo too. It’s nice to finally not be disappointed.

Maserati sales up 42% in H1 after significant push for new Grecale

Italian brand posted pre-tax profits of £104 million for the start of 2023, up 95% on the year before

Maserati posted a 42% rise in sales in the first half of 2023, driven by the new Maserati Grecale which launched earlier this year.

This push for the Porsche Macan-rivalling SUV, which in £99,700 top-spec Trofeo form packs a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, saw total global deliveries hit 15,300, up from 10,200 in the same period last year.

The new Maserati Granturismo, which joined the SUV this year, was another key factor to this growth, the brand said.

Pre-tax profits, therefore, nearly doubled (95%) to €121 million (£104m), which the brand said was helped by higher net pricing – the Grecale, for example, saw its starting price rise from £58,500 to £61,500 in the first six months of the year, but sales did not stall.

The 2023 Maserati Grecale Trofeo sure does perform well, but its high price makes me question who it's supposed to be for.

Verdict

The Grecale Trofeo has incredible performance in a segment where that can be pretty rare. While some of those quality issues I encountered gave me pause, what would really make me think twice about considering the Grecale Trofeo is its price. Sure you can pick up more basic versions for under $70,000, but it’s six-figure price puts it on another level. A Porsche Macan GTS would probably cost similar (or more with options), but it’s the benchmark for the segment. A BMW X3 M will perform nearly the same for way less money. Even Stellantis’ own Alfa Romeo will sell you a Stelvio Quadrifoglio that performs the same for less. Or you could go make your money make sense and buy an actual sports car with that $118,000+. However, if you do end up going for the Grecale Trofeo, you won’t be disappointed, but you might end up rethinking if it’s worth it.
