Petrol Maserati Levante will make up 10% of sales in UK following petrol u-turn

The 3.0 V6 Levante S will go on sale in the UK in September despite previous plans to only sell the diesel

The petrol-engined Maserati Levante S will account for around 10% of the Levante SUV's UK sales, according to North Europe boss Peter Denton, despite the car maker previously saying it would not sell a petrol version here.

A Maserati spokesman said that originally the petrol vehicle was not intended to be built in right-hand drive because “demand for volume would not justify the investment to re-engineer the model to support a different power plant”.

However, while demand is still expected to be low, he said that the project had been approved by the brand’s previous CEO [Harald Wester] following early feedback from journalists that it should be built for RHD markets.

Denton commented: “The segment size for higher capacity petrol engine SUVs is relatively small, and we therefore anticipate that Levante S sales will represent something close to 8 to 10% of the total volume of Levante sales in the UK.”

He added: “We are also aware that our prospective customers probably think about Maserati with petrol engines, so we’re prepared to consider a different mix.”

Denton expects to sell 1500 Levantes in Britain during 2017, with strong sales of the model prompting Maserati sales to climb 78 percent over the first four months of the year.

This is despite having “seen a reduction in the demand for Ghibli, which we attribute to conversion to Levante due to it being the latest model, priced similarly and of course in a highly fashionable segment, in which Levante has been priced extremely competitively,” he added.

The twin-turbo 424bhp 3.0 V6 Levante S will cost from £70,755, and is available from September.

Novitec (seriously) beefs up the Maserati Levante...

Novitec has traditionally focused on tuning supercars such as the Ferrari 488 GTB and Lamborghini Huracán. But now the German company has broadened its horizons to the SUV scene with this, the Maserati Levante Esteso.

The upgrade includes a rather striking body-kit as well as the obligatory bump in performance.

The widebody kit extends the width of the Levante to 2 090 mm and was apparently developed in a wind tunnel to ensure that the design reduces lift on the front axle. Novitec says the rear wing and diffuser are also designed to add aerodynamic stability.

The air suspension, meanwhile, has been modified to lower the ride height by 25 mm. The 22-inch Y-spoke alloys (each with a centre lock nut) are wrapped in 295/30 R22 front and 335/25 R22 rear tyres, while a carbon-fibre bonnet scoop adds to the Levante’s aggressive appearance.

Changes to the interior are less extensive, although certain parts of the cabin have been reupholstered in leather and Alcantara.

As for performance, both the turbocharged petrol and turbodiesel engines have been provided with a bump in power thanks to an ECU tune, which alters injection, boost pressure and ignition to provide more power and torque.

Thus, the top-of-the-range Levante S now produces 363 kW and 660 N.m of torque (an increase of 47 kW and 80 N.m), granting it a claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration figure of 4,8 seconds with a top speed of 272 km/h. The turbodiesel model is tuned to a maximum of 237 kW and 680 N.m of torque, resulting in a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 6,2 seconds.

The Levante Esteso can also be fitted with an active sound system for the exhaust, which Novitec says enhances the exhaust note when “Sport” mode is selected.

All Maserati models to use electric drive from 2019

Italian luxury car maker will spearhead Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' push for electrification, starting with the Alfieri

Every new Maserati will use some form of electric propulsion from 2019, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) CEO Sergio Marchionne has revealed.

During a conference call with investors, the boss of Maserati’s parent company said the brand would now spearhead the wider group’s push to electric, which will see more than half of FCA's range use some form of electric power by 2022.

FCA's brands, which also include Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler and Dodge, will all benefit from the new electric plan. Marchionne said Maserati will switch almost all of its investment in power trains to electric after “it completes the development of its next two models”.

The first new electrified Maserati is predicted to arrive in 2020 and will be based on the Alfieri concept that made its debut at the Geneva motor show in 2014. The all-electric model is a two-seater sports car that will use a new platform.

Before then, Maserati will hybridise several of its current models, with the Levante SUV model most likely to introduce a plug-in hybrid drivetrain to the range. As Maserati Europe boss Giulio Pastore told Autocar last year: “The current platform allows for hybrid. We are working on it for 2019, when we will be ready to offer hybridisation."

Marchionne said that FCA has been hesitant to invest in electric until now due to uncertainty, stating: “We [FCA] have been reluctant to embrace that avenue until we saw clearer the path forward."

Despite being part of its planning process, Marchionne will not head FCA during this push to electric. The 65-year-old Italian-Canadian announced that he will retire at the end of 2019.

Maserati Levante GTS to get 523bhp turbocharged Ferrari V8 engine

Hot SUV model due next year to rival Porsche Cayenne Turbo

The Maserati Levante will soon be hot on the heels of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo when a GTS version launches next year with a Ferrari V8 unit.

Spotted testing on the continent, the performance SUV model will inherit the twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre engine that’s currently used in the Quattroporte GTS, where it produces 523bhp.

With that output, the Levante GTS would rank just ahead of the 513bhp Cayenne Turbo and within reach of the upcoming Range Rover Velar SVR that’s expected to have around 542bhp

Like its hot SUV rivals, the Levante GTS will get bespoke chassis settings that are more road-biased than its siblings. Expect a harder performance mode for its air suspension that will sacrifice ride comfort for enhanced body control.

The car will wear GTS trim inside and out, with larger wheels and more aggressive bumpers for the exterior. The cabin will likely come with a higher-spec finish as standard, with a carbonfibre trim likely to signify the model’s sporting credentials.

The GTS will sit at the top of the Levante range, which currently receives power from either a 3.0-litre V6 petrol or a diesel engine of the same arrangement. The current quickest model, the V6 S GranSport, retails from £76,995, meaning the GTS could start from more than £80,000.

Following the GTS, Maserati will bolster its Levante line-up with a hybrid variant. It will mate the V6 petrol engine to an electric motor, shared with fellow Fiat Chrysler Automobiles stablemate Chrysler's Pacifica Hybrid, to offer around 33 miles of pure electric driving.
