Maserati MC20

Maserati planning new model onslaught for SA - here’s what to expect in 2021

Maserati is set to expand its range with five new models in 2021, and although the festivities kick off ‘sensibly’ with a hybrid version of the Ghibli sedan, things will get more heated after that with a trio of Trofeo performance models and the all-new MC20 supercar.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s in store.

Maserati MC20

Maserati is leaving the best for last, with the first-ever MC20 supercar scheduled to arrive around midyear. Billed as a ‘have your cake and eat it’ kind of package, the MC20 was designed to storm around a race track with the greatest of precision, while also providing a comfortable and luxurious experience on the way home.

Powering it is a brand new 3-litre V6 turbopetrol with an innovative dual combustion chamber derived from F1. With 463kW on tap, the MC20 is able to sprint from 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds, according to factory claims, while the top speed is listed at 325km/h.

Pricing for the new Maserati models will be released closer to launch.

Future Maserati models to use tech from MC20's new 621bhp V6

Nettuno engine will be offered only in supercar, but its twin-combustion ignition tech will appear elsewhere

Maserati's new 621bhp twin-turbocharged V6 – the first engine it has produced in-house for more than 20 years – will be offered only in the MC20 supercar, but technology from it will appear elsewhere.

Named in reference to the Roman god who inspired the Italian firm’s trident logo, the Nettuno is being developed and hand-built at the new Maserati Engine Lab in Modena.

Producing 583lb ft of torque along with 621bhp of power, the 3.0-litre engine is entirely free of electrification, instead using a twin-combustion ignition system to improve response.

Derived from Formula 1 technology, each of the 90deg-mounted cylinders features an extra pre-chamber containing a second spark plug, along with a dual-direct-injection system. Fuel can be fed into both chambers, with the twin sparkplugs allowing each to be fired separately. Maserati says this improves the engine’s response while also reducing fuel comsumption and reducing emissions.

Maserati MC20 Coming To South Africa This Year

Maserati is hoping for a stellar 2021 with a line-up of new models and the much-anticipated arrival of the all-new MC20 supercar.

The first to arrive will be the Ghibli Hybrid kicking off a new era for the brand.

“It is only fitting that the Ghibli Hybrid is the first new model from Maserati to be launched in South Africa. It combines petrol and electric power, which is significant for the future of our brand, and South Africa was host to the hybrid testing mules during their hot weather testing cycle,” says Nagesh Naidoo, the Dealer Principal of Maserati Johannesburg.

Maserati MC20 Handed Exclusive ARIA Carbon Fibre Aero Kit By 7 Designs

The Maserati MC20 is the first big step in the Maserati come back and things are looking even better especially when you can fit it with a new aero kit as seen here.

The carbon fibre ARIA Aero kit by 7 Designs invigorates the racing spirit the MC20 was hiding from the factory. Pure and powerful lines were inspired by the most track-focused vehicles to bring true racing DNA to the MC20.

Each body panel creates one complete package that is not only breathtaking but aerodynamically functional for performance.

Up close and personal with the new Maserati MC20 in Johannesburg

Order books are open and local interest has apparently been high – each of the units earmarked for SA thus far is bespoke, with white and black apparently being the firm favourite exterior colours. The MC20 also heralds a new era for Maserati bespoke customisation with the Fuoriserie programme – think Q by Aston Martin, Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur and BMW Individual. Ultimately to be rolled out across the Maserati range, this programme allows customers a higher level of customisation for their vehicles.

Customer Maserati MC20s will make landfall by the end of October 2021, with an assurance from Maserati’s headquarters that whatever local demand for the MC20 will be met.

Do you approve of this carbon bodykitted Maserati MC20?

Just 25 of these aftermarket ARIA Aero Kits are being lined up for production

The Maserati MC20 is a very, very handsome supercar. Fairly restrained in its original form, though, isn’t it? So, if that’s not for you, how about this bodykit from Estonian designer Siim Pärn and his company 7 Designs?

Carbon add-ons often look a little shoddy, but these renderings have certainly caught our attention. Check out the MC12-style roof scoop and the relocated exhausts to make room for the giant diffuser. Very strong.

The pronounced front lip and side skirts bring the 621bhp MC20 closer to the ground and that massive rear wing curves with the rear of the car. It looks great in silver with the blue carbon too. Or is that just us?

Maserati MC20 2021 review

Should I buy one?

Maserati’s return to the supercar ranks is a rousing triumph. After a period where its future looked tied to a range of volume-market saloons and an SUV, it has silenced its critics - and there were many - with a supercar that perfectly encapsulates the flashes of brilliance in its illustrious past, establishing a new level of performance for the brand and taking it into direct competition with Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren for mid-engine supercar supremacy.

The MC20 is world-class – fast, thrilling, engaging and, to these eyes, rather special to look at. It is the perfect foundation for the company to build on as it seeks to fulfil its potential as a force among premium brands under the wing of its parent company, Stellantis. Let’s hope it is not a one-off burst of brilliance.

Maserati MC20 supercar makes UK dynamic debut

621bhp supercar will lead Italian brand's revival with convertible, motorsport and electric variants

The Maserati MC20 supercar has received its first UK public public showing at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, ahead of customer deliveries later this year.

Taking part in the supercar run at the event's famed hill climb, the mid-engined two-seater will spearhead a bold multi-billion pound revival plan for the historic Italian marque that includes a return to its performance-focused and racing roots.

Initially being sold with a mid-mounted 621bhp V6, the new halo model will also offer electric power in the future. Convertible and motorsport versions are also on the cards.

The MC20 is the first supercar that Maserati has produced since the limited-run MC12 two-seater it launched in 2004. While that model was essentially a reworked Ferrari Enzo, the MC20 marks Maserati’s return to producing its very own sports cars, after parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) sold its stake in Ferrari back in 2016.
