Sup guys.

Ok so here's the story: I missed the whole mass effect thing when it came out. Now, with the hype around ME 2 and everything I decided to give it a go by starting out with ME 1. I skipped it when it came out because my one mate told me it pissed him off haha. I never understood and never bothered to find out why until now.

The story and everything besides the combat in this game is golden. Seems like an awesome RPG. the story sucks me in and I would really love to finish it. However, HOLY CRYING MOTHER OF JUPITER does this game's combat piss me off. I mean seriously I simply have no idea how to, like, be good at this game haha.

Long story short, I've just got control of the normandy and starting the game proper but I just can't kill much of anything. My squad constantly does the stupidest things, Shephard dies within nanoseconds when up against anything that can throw a punch, the abilities I have do so much of nothing it's actually quite astounding etc etc. All in all, it's just making me want to punch puppies.

So what I'm asking is, if there are any ME 1 veterans here, please give me some tips on how to play this game. I might be coming off as a noob but I really couldn't care less. Just tell me what I need to do to be able to kill something in this game before I claw my eyes out and feed them to a homeless person.

Disclaimer: please note I am not ripping on this game, this is my personal experience with it that I am conveying to you all. :)

Combat in ME1 is damn annoying. Tactics will depend on what class you selected for yourself, because this will determine what skills you have available to you. I play Vanguard, so it makes me half-decent in combat and I get some biotic powers to throw aliens around with. Play to your classes particular strengths, and select a your mission team so that there are no obvious gaps. In the initial levels you are kinda weak, so you will have to go about scavenging stuff to sell and buy some armor upgrades for yourself and your squad. Don't neglect to fiddle with your inventory to make sure you are using the best armour \ weapons currently available to you.

I imagine you are only playing ME1 to get the back-story and create your character for ME2. Perhaps you should drop the difficulty setting in the annoying combat parts and just get through them. ME2 is way less annoying, so if I were you I'd hurry up and finish the central story on ME1 so you can get started on the sequel.

Hmm why didn't I think of changing the difficulty haha. I'm such a chop. Anyway, I'm playing a soldier but I really don't dig it. I think I'm gonna restart tonight on easiest and just keep trying until I figure this game out. Another question is, did you use 1 squad mostly throughout the game or did you change it up very often? Just wondering if it's possible to stick to one team as I'm quite a fan of that. Thanks for the fast reply btw :)

You can do a play-through with 1 squad, no problem there. I don't believe the game penalizes you for doing that since all your team members will gain experience regardless if they were on missions or not.
So stick with who you like :)

I personally found the normal difficulty fine and was able to plough through most combat situations, however the game will throw a few tough ones at you where you'll have to think tactfully.
Some tips: Use your abilities! (Your abilities can recharge fairly quickly so don't be too shy to use them)
Take cover! (Cover can buy you time to recharge shields while avoiding enemy fire and is the best place to return it)
Level up your Health and Armor! (Make sure you pump a good number of points into there early, same goes for your team mates and especially if you're a soldier.)
Use the Environment! (Sometimes you can draw enemies out of a large area into another area in smaller numbers, making it easier when you take on the rest. It's tricky, but it's saved my ass many times)
Upgrade! (Stock up on good equipment, and use ammo upgrades where necessary. For instance, equip tungsten rounds for Geth enemies, and anti-personnel for humans and aliens)

When all else fails, adjust the difficulty. Good luck! :)

I found it was quite hard in the beginning, and then after a while got much much easier. I think your character and squad mates level up, but your enemies stay the same. Do some side missions to level up which should make things easier for the main missions.

The trick to surviving ME (especially on higher difficulty levels) is micro management. Your team members are retards when it comes to abilities, so I would recommend you turn off the ai's use of abilities and choose which ones to use yourself depending on the situation.

Start with the Soldier class and drop the difficulty level until you get the hang of it. The combat in ME2 is much better (I would say almost as good as Gears of War).

Also follow the usual rules of combat - take cover frequently. Don't forget to level up as you gain experience. Allocate points to areas that you struggle with. However don't neglect adding points to the Charm and Intimidate skills - they'll give you additional dialog options that get you lots of Paragon or Renegade points, and will influence other characters very much more than the normal dialog options would.

And explore a lot, upgrade things like your armor, and add upgrades to the armor to give you additional protection.

The soldier class sucks rather take a other class. See if maybe it will suite your play style better. And figure out the weak points on enemy's the head is not always the best place. Also freaking take cover or you will constantly die.Pick the teammates you feel most comfortable playing with and you should be able to handle most situations(this is for lower difficult settings only), Switch your ammo for certain enemies.

The Soldier class sucks ass, but it's the right choice for a beginner. You get all the weapons and heavy armor.

I enjoyed playing as a sentinel with singularity as the extra talent. Pure biotics and engineering goodness. Try being a sentinel and play with Liara and Kaidan as teamates...enemies are always floating around ;)
Playing as a soldier is easiest in the early stages of the game though.

I tried solider, what a horrible class to play. I chose the infiltrator as my main. Was pretty awesome :) Sniper rifle > and pistols are all you keen, with a few bio skills its lekker.

Soldier class is the easiest to play, but they are boring after a while.
While playing soldier, I unlocked both assault rifles and sniper rifles. When I start another class, I can choose either of them and get them as an additional skill to level up. It's useful with the Adept class, since I just lift them and then snipe them while they are floating around.

haha this sounds pretty epic :) Anyway I started over again playing as a vanguard this time around and I'm enjoying it a lot more. Turned off automatic powers as well which as helped a LOT. But yeah, I'm getting somewhere now :)
