Mass Effect Will Require Online Activation (each 10 days or no play !)

To clarify:

If you buy MEPC, install and run the game the game will register automatically and you are good to play.

After 5 days the next time you start the game the system will automatically try to register. If you are connected to the internet, it will occur without you even knowing it and reset the 10 days.

If you are not connected to the internet, you can keep playing for the next 5 days. As you start each day, the system will keep trying to validate. If it connects and validates, the "clock" is reset.

If the system cannot connect to the internet after the 10 days, you will not be able to play MEPC until you are connected to the internet. Once you reconnect to the internet and try to play, it will re-validate and you can play as normal for another period of 10 days as before.

So it is not "at 10 days and if the servers aren't working you're screwed". There is a large window (5days) where the system automatically tries to re-validate to prevent last minute problems.

AHAHAHAHHAHAH! I can forget about that my ISP is so krap I cant even use steam >_> let alone a online activation....
 
Well, I have seen this game on the X360 and all I can saw is ... WOW. I really wouldn't mind the online activation thing so it really doesn't bother me that much. I guess they'll probably remove it later on like they did with Bioshock :D

You know, I feel sorry for these people. They're so naive it's almost humorous. It's like a child harming itself to get attention.

Within a week, there will be a crack to get around this. In the meantime, they've spent god knows how much on this activation BS, and they've caused inconvenience to their customers.

Shame.
 
Well I don't blame them for doing something...even if it saves a few cracked copies. I personally would be trying everything possible if it were me losing so much to pirates.
 
Defiance or Razz0r will have that cracked in no time!

They should put that energy into something like DLC or other added value which require the a player to register a legal copy (or activate once) to get to download the additional content. It WILL be cracked.
 
You okes must be real desperate to game to be treated like this.
 
The only way to stop this sort of treatment from companies towards their legitimate customers is to not buy products from companies that pull this sort of garbage.

I was considering getting ME, not anymore.

Spore, Mass Effect PC to Require Online Validation

BioWare technical producer Derek French has said that the PC versions of both Mass Effect and Spore will make use of copy protection that will require online validation every ten days to continue working. According to French, Maxis' Spore will also make use of the same scheme: "[Electronic Arts] is ready for us and getting ready for Spore, which will use the same system." French also noted that the online requirement will be clearly labeled on the games' packaging.

Mass Effect uses SecuROM and requires an online activation for the first time that you play it. Each copy of Mass Effect comes with a CD Key which is used for this activation and for registration here at the BioWare Community. Mass Effect does not require the DVD to be in the drive in order to play, it is only for installation. After the first activation, SecuROM requires that it re-check with the server within ten days (in case the CD Key has become public/warez'd and gets banned). Just so that the 10 day thing doesn't become abrupt, SecuROM tries its first re-check with 5 days remaining in the 10 day window. If it can't contact the server before the 10 days are up, nothing bad happens and the game still runs. After 10 days a re-check is required before the game can run.
 
I can't believe how people can be pissed at this.

It's just like the whole advertising in BF2142 or the Bioshock installation thing (granted tho that was on e of the more stupid thing a developer has done).

They're trying to stop piracy. Will they succeed? Hell no. But it's their product nad if they want to try they can.

Also PC gamers are only paying R275 for it(pre-order at BT Games). That's nearly half the X360s price now. If a person is not willing to pay even that, then that's just sad. :D

Another reason I'd buy the game. No disc needed to play? What a pleasure.

And we can not buy it.

Companies need to learn the lesson that treating their paying customers as criminals out of the gate is just going to piss them off and engender ill will towards their brand.
 
I Don't give a sh*t, I will buy Spore (Pc) even if it's R400, and Mass Effect - hmm...looks good, waiting for playable Demo's/etc....maybe i'll buy that too, depends.

It is nice to get something for free, but it's also cool to see companies actually doing stuff to protect their massive releases - I will buy them anyway! Wouldn't like to play spore single player only....that would be sad!

I would hate to see the PC Gaming Industry left for dead, to the console market - consoles are not my thing.

Everyone loves getting stuff for free but if everyone does it there will be no more stuff - free or not!
 
I much prefer online activation compared to any other anti piracy methods. Also with this method you will be allowed to play the game with the disc , no need for a no cd patch.

This is only an issue if you don't have broadband at home, if you do I see no issue.

Or if you want to keep the game and play it in 5 years time when they've taken their servers offline.
