I just listened to COSATU's 2nd deputy president Zingiswa Losi on 702 and the protest action tomorrow is for labour brokering only!

COSATU applied to march for anti labour brokering and anti e-tolling in two separate applications but only the anti labour brokering application was approved.
This means that any COSATU member who strikes for e-tolling is unprotected.

Zingiswa Losi was also rather scathing when John Robbie asked her why COSATU doesn't join the DA in their legal action against SANRAL. She finally said that the DA needs to pay for the toll roads.
One can clearly see the racist view points of COSATU showing through the cracks and I will not be supporting their anti labour brokering march.
COSATU can't possibly join in a court with the main opposition while still allied to the ANC, simple politics nothing to do with race.

If it was just for Tolling, I would support it. I refuse to support anything else
Yup, Cosatu deliberately wants to blur the two together so they can say whoever marched with them, supports them on both issues. I want to very clearly show my opposition to Tolling without it being mixed with the labour broking issue (which i do believe is a valid issue). It makes it too easy for Government to dismiss.

And Eskom and SAA and the domestic workers and the refuse collectors and and and... :p
LOL. if only we could have one legal protest per year - I know it contradicts what I just said, buy imagine a national protest your issue day, all other protests and strikes made illegal. Imagine the productivity benefits......

..... I wish we had the taxis behind us
Government are too chicken to take them on, exactly why the unfair exclusion of taxis and buses. This would have been one unique opportunity for everyone to be on the same side.

not happy that they have combined the two issues of labour brokers and e-tolling, I was going to go and join in but now I'm having second thoughts

Update:
COSATU's 2nd deputy president Zingiswa Losi phoned into 702 again to clarify/rectify what she said.

Regarding the DA joining the march - some long excuse about COSATU not being affiliated to any political party.
Regarding the anti tolling - some extremely long winded explanation regarding taxis and public transport. So long in fact that I have no clue what she actually meant.

Opposition parties around the world unite for good causes. Dems and Reps do it often in the US. Same applies to Labour, Lib Dems etc in the UK.

As I've been saying for some time now, Cosatu are a fully fledged political party now - they are not a trade union...

Has anyone bothered to ask why was the e-toll march not deemed worthy to be protected?

Look, COSATU have pulled a sneaky by lumping the labour brokering story in to the normal march, but on the labour brokering side of things in terms of the law labour brokering doesn't really offer an employer much protection, employees just think it does. Anyway Gov uses so much CONsulting just to function they really can't survive without it at the moment. I for one think it might be a good thing for gov, if they can't do labour brokering they can still buy services, but then they might actually put in some performance targets which would be much better. Right now you have consultants managing consultants from the same outsource company...

Back to the march, COSATU may have been very clever and realised one of the strike options would be blocked, so they have a legal right to strike now (due to the second application). Everyone can strike against the tolling, then if their employer tries to not pay them they can say they were striking about labour brokerage - kind of clever:)

As much as COSATU can use it for the labour brokerage issue they and everyone else can also use it for the eToll story, government HAS to take notice. I am just glad COSATU is starting to flex their muscle against the ANC directly - it makes for more vigourous politics and a healthier opposition.

Zingiswa Losi said that the deadline was missed.
She did not say whether it was COSATU who missed the application deadline or whether they hadn't received feedback on the application before the deadline.

wish it would have made a diff, but this tolling thing is simply not going away... too far down the line.
not getting an e-tag, or not paying for the tolls is one thing... but we know gov IS definately going to make this stick... eventually they will just handle refusal to pay for tolls as traffic violations, and take off points off your drivers license, and prevent you from renewing your car's license, then you are really screwed.
best we can go for is getting the price reduced
and the guys in other provinces just wait..... its coming to you too ... the gauties cant be the only buggers to have these fancy tollers :-)

Yeah I was all for the strike and mass action against the e-tolling until I heard that Cosatu had tied it up with the Labour brokering dispute. Now to me, this mass action is for labour brokering only, even though cosatu keep pushing the agenda that it is for the E-tolling as well.

If it was also for E-tolling, why only 1 strike up in Gauteng where the E-toll is?

Gotta be honest, I support both causes in the strike. It's getting hard to find reliable long-term employment, and there's hardly ever any benefits anymore, and the pay is too little to afford these things out of your own pocket. I've not been able to afford medical aid ever since I've gone off my parents aid. Combining easily into all that is the cost of petrol somehow chews up everything else - can't imagine how bad these tolls are gonna hurt. And again, all these 'temps' don't get fuel allowances or anything like that. It's gotten too easy for companies to dodge investing in their employees.

My point excatly... imagine working as a temp for almost 5yrs!!!!

Question: Are only union members protected during this strike? Somehow I don't see it being condoned for non-union members to join in... Not sure how all this works?

Imagine not working at all because the company would rather not have the risk and overhead of employing someone full time.

Why should companies who specialise in project-based work be forced to carry the over-head of employing entire teams on a full-time basis? There is absolutely nothing consitutionally wrong with labour brokers. Even Cosatu will admit it the moment you ask them whether casual labour in itself should be outlawed. Of course not...

These multi strikes are quite efficient.

Maybe the miners and metalworkers should join in, then they don't have to strike in July.

Why not just give all a public holliday :p

Maybe I will support in solidarity down here by going to the beach for the day and creating a queue at the Ice-Cream guy.

I lol'ed at that mental picture.
