Eastern Cape police have arrested 3 suspects following a huge perlemoen bust outside Port Elizabeth.

Hawks spokesperson, Paul Ramaloko says two Chinese nationals and a South African were arrested earlier on Monday, after 5 tonnes of perlemoen were found near Coega.

He says members of the Hawks are still at the scene, trying to establish the street value of the find.

If we keep reading about these massive busts, then I want to know just how perlemoen are left in the ocean?
They are endangered are they not?

The perlies are stripping the reefs and causing irreparable damage. It has a knock on effect, which you can ask any commercial fisherman about!
 
Just like the copper thieves, they don't care about the damage they cause or the consequences of their actions.

Wish the Hawks could arrest the whole syndicate.
 
I hate reading these things. Perlemoen is AWESOME TO EAT!

When this happens this delicacy is being ripped from our ocean and the odds of having it again gets less and less. I can't even get myself to buy it anymore due to this issue. I know there is farms breading them now, but still I support sustainable fishing and this is very sad.

I love Perlemoen so much :cry:

And all this poached stuff ends up in the Far East...
