Massive youtube preview thumbnails

Seems to be a common trend. Netflix did the same where you can only see a few posters at a time even if you have a 4k 65inch+ TV.

Doesn't make any sense.

Hate to break it to you...but resolution is resolution and it doesn't change with the size of the screen.

I figured writing 4k+ 65inch+ would be redundant.
Its also possible to get screen size from many devices and adjust layout so resolution isn't the only factor.

Here's the reason for the recent YouTube UI change... 🤡😛

YouTube Is Testing a New Video UI That You Might Not Like - How-To-Geek

YouTube has quietly rolled out many design changes, but for the most part, they've either been inoffensive or people have quickly adapted to them. This one, however, might be the most sensitive yet, and I'm not sure many will embrace it with open arms.

YouTube is currently testing a significant redesign of its web video player interface, introducing substantial changes to the look and layout familiar to everyone for nearly a decade.

Everything around the actual video playing UI has changed except that interface, and Google is now daring to play around with some changes to it to make it feel more "modern."

The most striking alteration in the test interface is the fragmentation of the control bar. Instead of residing on a unified, semi-transparent gradient strip, primary controls are now isolated within individual floating 'pills' or 'capsules'.

The Play/Pause button is still there on the left, and most of the controls are in the places you'd expect them to be, but everything looks a bit more broken apart. The 'capsules' themselves are opaque, probably to improve visibility in a variety of different videos regardless of the background behind.

The part that most people might not be okay with, though, might not be the actual visuals of the interface. Though they might be heavily changed, it's probably something people will get used to after a few months.

The actually offensive part is that the volume controls are now being moved from the left side to the right side. On the left side, you're left with the Play/Pause button, a Next button if you happen to be watching a video that's part of a playlist, and the timestamp—everything else is on the right, and the volume button is now placed alongside subtitles and video settings options.

The bigger thumbnails might help seeing less of the constipation thumbnails.
They probably worked out that with small thumbnails, just putting a huge pic of your funny face draws the eyes as the other things on the thumbnail is mostly to small too see.
Maybe with bigger thumbnails you would rather click on videos with more important details visible.
I would try anything to see less of this in the future.

Yeah for other devices certainly, I’m just saying for TV it’s going to all look the same (in ratio) regardless of how big or small it is, if the resolution is the same.

That being said it wouldn’t be hard for them to simply add some GUI configuration options.

Then again these are the same muppets where you can’t remove or hide logged in accounts.

But wait, there's more - MUCH, MUCH MORE!... 😛

YouTube's New TV App Is Adding the Worst Type of Content to Its Front Page - muo

In April 2025, YouTube mentioned that it was planning a redesigned video player and other improvements. But first spotted by 9to5Google, there’s much more in the works, and some of it isn’t exactly exciting.

The app will be adding a number of shelves to give you quick access to videos. YouTube explains more about what to expect:

  • The “Continue your search” shelf shows you your top three searches, allowing you to jump back in right where you left off.
  • The “Listen again” shelf is a dedicated music shelf that shows you the top songs you’ve previously searched for and listened to.
  • The “Live performances, remixes, and covers” shelf shows you other versions of your favorite songs, beyond the official versions.
  • The Primetime Channels shelf, for those subscribed, shows content from your most recently searched for and watched Primetime Channels.
  • The “From your top channels” shelf shows you your top watched YouTube channels.
A Podcasts tab will also let you quickly jump into podcasts directly from your library.

But if you’re not a fan of Shorts, we’ve got some bad news for you. Those will now be split out from longer videos to easily access. There will be a Shorts row in the Watch Next feed and a Shorts Shelf on your subscription tab. Just wonderful.

You will also be able to loop more content. Previously available on just playlists, you can now loop all VOD content. Just choose Loop from the Playback settings.

Vertical Videos and TVs Don't Mix

I’m a fan of watching YouTube on a bigger screen, and these changes are not exactly mind-blowing. I absolutely hate Shorts, so I’m not excited to see those be more prominently featured. Why do we need more vertical videos on a TV screen?

But the other changes, like the improved previews, seem to sound really nice.

Also, I’m not thrilled that more AI is coming to YouTube. Once you search for a query, AI Overviews will address the query and display relevant clips under a new carousel.

Looks like YT are pushing us to look at the shorts... which is not what I want.

I have a different issue on the Google TV YT app. No matter how much I scroll, it mostly shows the same 10 videos over and over again. There are a few extra sprinkled in but if there is nothing interesting in those 10 videos I have to force it to refresh and generate some new results.

Youtube really seems to have gotten kakker in the last few weeks. Aside from smaller thumbnails, the videos it serves after I'm watching something are often completely unrelated (a dj set after watching a food thing) whereas previously it would hardly ever do this. It's also getting very persistent when presenting new videos - I've been ignoring a video that's been sitting in the top row of thumbnails for 3 days now and it's still there; feels like it's much slower to give me new stuff.

How about a third option you idiots: Because I'm tired of this **** stuck at the top of my feed for 4 days.

U-block ftw

My row is set to 5 videos with this ... post under "My Filters" section

!This part limits the number of videos per row. go ahead and play with the number.

youtube.com##ytd-rich-grid-renderer:style(--ytd-rich-grid-items-per-row: 5 !important;)
! Remove empty spaces in grid
youtube.com##ytd-rich-grid-row,#contents.ytd-rich-grid-row:style(display: contents !important)

No matter what the zoom size, it will always be 5

For those that don't like Shorts, use this, available as an extension in Chrome or an add-on in Firefox: Hide shorts for Youtube™

It always baffles me that people use YouTube in a browser.

Similarly how people use Netflix in the same way.

How would you like us to do it on a w10/w11 PC, where the installed browser add-blocker (+ whatever other addon) will also work on other apps

My post rather related to how I find the means of consumption interesting as I only ever use Netflix or YouTube on a TV…maybe on my tablet on the odd occasion.

Im on the PC ±10yrs a day, so it easier for me to just open it here when a new sub vid pops up. The only ones here that use the TV app is the kids :p
