Mate 9

Middle to end March. Have been using one for almost a month now and very very nice phone.

Reviews are great so far. I'm moving from an iPhone 6 so I'm expecting great things with that huge battery and the Kirin octacore.

I'm due to switch now but I think I'll go on a sim only deal for a month and wait for the Mate 9 instead of taking the Mate 8 which is 2 ears old already and surely near the end of its run.

Only a few clicks on a Chinese site away.

I know it's cheaper to buy outright but it suits my setup to have a top tier contract and pay ti month on month.

Mate 8 not 2 years old, you thinking of the mate 7

Yeah good question, was eyeing this phone when it came out, looked really really nice, but now seems like ages ago and now couldn't be bothered.

So once again, we are left behind in getting anything on time or even getting things in this country.

I saw the Mate 9 advertised in an MTN pamphlet with the words "coming soon". The pricing looks quite decent as well, just hope it doesn't take too long to get released. This phone looks awesome and I'm patiently waiting for it!

Sold my mate 9 a couple days ago and bought a V20, wow what a big mistake!!
Mate 9 is better in almost everything and you can't even compare them.
Camera better
Screen is only 1080 but better in brightness especially outside and for me the better screen(v20 screen very dark)
Battery life is rubbish on the v20
Speakers on mate 9 also way better.
Finger scanner on mate 9 way ahead on v20, no need to push you just touch it and it has plenty other functions you can use it for.
General use also mate 9 much faster and smoother.

Ouch! That is quite a lot of things that went south.

Nothing worse than a downgrade in Battery Life, but did you not realise when looking at the V20 Spec sheet that it has a much smaller battery?

Sorry you had to learn the hard way man. Will you be getting another Mate 9?

Will definitely be getting another mate 9 yes. I knew the battery wasn't as good as as mate 9 but the difference is shocking if you compare the size of batteries in both phones.

This is the main reason I'm waiting for the Mate 9 as opposed to getting the V20. Difference in battery life is the deal-breaker!

V20 screen is actually quiet bright, you sure you haven't got yours set to Auto or something? Set my iPhone 7 plus and V20 on full brightness and they are almost identical.
You don't need to push the finger print scanner on the V20, just touch it. :-)

What is the date of your last security update? Still sitting on October's and it won't update.
I see all sorts of fixes have been released in the newer patches and am a bit annoyed I don't have them

Anyone knows the variants that we get locally? Do they all come with Dual sim?

Anyone knows how "Huawei Select" warranty works? does one need to register for it?

Mine, from MTN is a single SIM, MHA-L09 (looks like the L29 is the local dual SIM version). I haven't been asked to register for the Select. I'm sure Proof of Purchase will be sufficient.

I you get one, do yourself a favour and use the "Firmware Finder" app to update the firmware as there are some nice updates for the camera and screen touch sensitivity but these haven't been released locally for whatever dumb reason.

Thanks for the tip!

Anyone have a link to more info on Huawei select? How would I know if my phone is covered? What are the terms?

Oreo-based EMUI 8.0 coming to the Mate 9

Huawei announced today the Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 Porsche Design with Android Oreo. The company also unveiled that four more devices will get the latest version of the launcher - the Mate 9, the Mate 9 Pro, the P10 and the P10 Plus. The phablets will get the upgrade in “three to four weeks”, while the P-series flagships should arrive “in the near future”.

Huawei announced that the devices with EMUI 8.0 will have faster app launching and better power allocation. According to in-house test results, performance improved by 12%.

The user interface will also suggest features based on environment and user interaction, like a suggestion to turn on the blue light filter. EMUI 8.0 will also offer to open notifications in split-screen if the app is compatible with this feature of course.

Sadly, Huawei Mate 9 camera will not get the real-time smart scene recognition, but most of the other AI features should be part of the update.

Most of the changes Huawei made are actually on the inside. The Emotion UI will sport the same basic design with no major changes.

The announcement also mentioned security updates. Top-notch Huawei devices will get patches every month, with mid-tier phones receiving them every two months. The entry-level handsets will be updated once every three months.
