The Department of Basic Education has reiterated that it will not be removing Maths for Grades 7 to 9, after several news reports indicated that it would.

Most people are not going to compete in a global economy. What we need is people who can contribute to the local economy.

I am going to be ruthlessly pragmatic here, but I actually think what they should do is ditch the concept of forcing everyone to take an academic education and rather allow for the fact that some people are not going to do well in maths, no matter how dumbed down and easy to pass it is. I would be all in favor if they dropped all compulsory subjects and rather had the trades like welding,building, electrics, woodwork and plumbing built into the school syllabus for people who can't/won't want to do the academic subjects. Someone leaving school with a bunch of trades like woodwork and plumbing is far more useful to society than someone leaving with a 20% in Maths literacy, 30% English and 40% other subjects.

have to agree on this - too much is placed on "higher" education - there's nothing wrong with a trade. once qualified they can start there own business and employ people.

And that is why there were " trade schools" in the good olde days. Schools that specialized in the above courses as well as the basics of the "3 R's"
