Maths teachers can't pass matric papers

First of all i want to say i like the article picture :D

Secondly , we as the cANCer are going to review the pass mark downwards from 35% as it is racist, at the moment we are considering eleventeen % as the new pass mark.

In 1981 my school in 'ye olde Transvaal' was without a science teacher (said science teacher being fired for conduct unbecoming :sick:).

We std 8s (and the 9s & 10s) were left to fend for ourselves for a few weeks until a rather brave Arts teacher took it upon himself to "teach" us ... he knew less than we did about the subject, but attacked it with such enthusiasm and humility (asking US to explain when he didn't get it!) that at the end of that year (after almost 7 months of his tuition) when we wrote an exam set by another school (because he couldn't set one), I got 97% ... the highest mark I've ever had in any exam in my life ... and our class average was over 65% (higher grade, nogal!) ... I'll not mention his name, but we kids idolised him. ... and his favourite expression was: "clear as MUD"!

I agree that professional teachers should be more than competent in their chosen subject, but will always believe that it is not the teacher's personal level of knowledge that matters so much as the fact that they know how to TEACH.

The biggest problem we have in teaching in SA today (and my wife is a teacher, so I have experience, albeit 2nd hand), is not lack of knowledge, but lack of professionalism.
 
Matric mathematics are pathetically easy, you'd have to be a moron to fail.

I thought you needed to obtain a degree at a university to become a teacher?
 
How many of these Maths teachers is there because of BEE and not because of their experience and education? Probably nothing wrong with BEE on paper, but in practice, it's not working, because they appoint the first candidate they come across and not the best. Evaluation tests and Psychometric test is there for a reason.

On average, unfortunately, you might be right. But, you don't need someone with 3rd year maths to teach. Even one year at varsity should be OK, if you have a well trained and enthusiastic teacher.

I'm "here" every day ... just lurk, mostly!
Must say, since relocating, my interest & perspective have changed quite a bit ... out in the sticks where I am, I only get about 5Mbs for my 16Mbps account, but it's still VASTLY better than the <1Mbps I used to get on my 4Mbps in Pretoria ...

And here the cost is irrelevant ... it's so small I don't even consider it.
