Met the dude a few times... nice guy but wrecked his life with drug addiction.

RIP

EDIT: He was a KTV presenter back in the day.
 
Idols presenter dies on beach

Shame!

I heard about this from one of my friends who is a medic and was on scene when it happened but I didn't know who it was and I don't think HE knew either.

Cape Town - South African TV presenter and theatre actor Matthew Stewardson died on Friday afternoon.

Eyewitness News reports that Stewardson was holidaying with friends in Jeffrey’s Bay in the Eastern Cape, when he collapsed on the beach after complaining about breathing problems.

“Jeffreys Bay police received a phone call of an incident at the beach. According to some witnesses, a 35-year-old man was on the beach when he collapsed,” Jeffreys Bay police told EWN.

Police were still investigating the cause of his death but it is believed he suffered a heart attack or a stroke.

Hi sister, Cheryl Cawood, told Beeld Matthew’s death was very sudden and “no one knew what happened”. The former child star was due to celebrate his 36th birthday on Saturday.

In the mid to late 90s Matthew Stewardson looked set to become a rising star on the South African entertainment circuit. He made his name as one of the older presenters on K-TV.

In 2002 M-Net bought the rights to host Idols, a reality singing competition that originated in the UK.

Stewardson was appointed with Candy Litchfield to co-host the show, but halfway through the first season he was axed and replaced with Sami Sabiti

Soon afterwards the 27-year-old checked himself into a rehab centre.
He had a brief stint on 5Fm as a DJ, and hosted some small daytime shows on SABC.

I'm thinking he was using again... the possibility is there!
 
I remember him very well. He also did numerous ads on TV. He co-hosted PlayTV on SABC 3 a few years back. RIP. :(
 
I only recall him for being axed from Idols and then checking into rehab.
I'm also prone to suspect that he'd been using again...

RIP nonetheless guy.

"using" and spending all day on the beach along with other possible symptoms (which he would've known about) is probably all coming together and resulting in his death.
 
He did enough over the last 10 years to make this a possibility. You end up doing so much damage that even if you stop there is still a high chance of a stroke/heart attack.

Unless you start to look after yourself/body properly!

Just stopping doesn't fix the problem.
 
I knew Matt quite well as I designed and hosted his website - www.stewardson.co.za

He just couldn't kick his drug habit and, in fact, just came out of another rehab session about three weeks ago. I spoke to him just last week and he sounded very optimistic. Maybe years and years of abuse took its toll on his body?

His late dad, Joe Stewardson, was a well known South African actor back in the 60s and 70s, but he was also an alcoholic. It's so sad to see talent like this go wasted.

Anyway, may he rest in peace ... and condolences to his family.
