Most traffic on the N1 in the morning is from Pretoria to Joburg. It makes sense to assume that these people live in Pretoria.

It has been suggested that people should go around shopping centres in Joburg and count etags to see what the uptake has been. They'd be better off doing that in Pretoria.

But yesterday Vusi Liar Liar Mona said that they had sold 707000 tags. Seeing that 700000 had been the number sold since 2011, the uptake has been low.
 
E-tolls will murder the economy

If e-tolls go through and ANC wins next year we will be worse off than Zimbabwe.

That shall not happen!

So nobody in JHB drives to the airport or uses any of the e-toll roads when going shopping or visiting friends? None of them work in PTA? Seams a bit of a stretch if you ask me. I would argue that the average PTA person is more likely to resist e-tolls than the average JHB person - based on average income primarily.

I think what he means is that the main revenue stream will come from the Pretoria side, which I agree with. But I only know of two people that have e-tags on this side.

Bit of a reading failure this morning? Most is not the same as all.

It's harder to think of who is more stubborn though. Despite obvious reasons why they shouldn't, Pretorianers support the Bulls and the local lot support the Lions.

I'm going to laugh at all the people who get tagged once SANRAL start jacking up the prices and lift the caps.

The problem is R450 is a lot of money.
R450 per month means one needs to earn an extra R750 per month (gross) if you're taxed at 40%.
The wasted investment opportunity of not putting away R750 per month into a RA/pension/providend fund over a 30 year period is huge.

SA Post Office can handle e-toll bills

The SA Post Office (Sapo) has expressed confidence that it would be able to deal with an influx of Gauteng e-toll bills, Beeld newspaper reported on Thursday.

"Even if one million motorists decided to use the highways without etags every day, and we received one million e-toll bills per day, our systems would be able to handle it," said Newyear Ntuli, group head of e-business at Sapo.

He said the SA Post Office already handled an average of 450,000 traffic-related post per month.

Last week, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters announced that e-tolling in Gauteng would begin on December 3.

Road users without an e-toll account, or a day pass, have a seven-day grace period to pay from the time he or she passed the gantry. A bill would be sent through the post if the account is not paid within seven days.

It is not often that I quote myself, but here goes (this is from another thread in CA):



I am confused.

In the main e-toll thread, it was made clear that SANRAL will not be billing people who have no e-tags. It was stated that it is people's own responsibility to contact SANRAL and find out what they are owing, and pay up, which IMO goes against the Consumer Protection Act.

So how can SANRAL say one thing and the Post Office says another????

There's no reason why Pretoria ppl will be any more pressured. If you're thinking this just because of the N1 traffic and the PTA-JHB commuters, you may not have noticed that Johannesburg is completely circled by toll roads (unlike Pretoria). You could equally say the "chink" will come from the South where anyone travelling into JHB/Sandton/Randburg coming from Germiston, Bedfordview, Alberton, Soweto, Lenasia would usually be on toll routes. I don't think there is any point in singling out any one area, let's not let them "divide and conquer" unnecessarily.
