Maybe a codec problem?

So when the video for a game plays, the screen has a flickering band/line across the middle? I also noticed it does this on certain video clips (don't know the format ... on NAG dvd). So, could it be I am missing a codec or two and if so .... where do I find out which ones and where to get them? Info appreciated :D

If it is a codec issue, try installing the latest divx codecs (www.divx.com) .Can't remember the name of the codec pack I used to use for Windows.
Might be your graphics drivers if it happens in games. Are they the newest drivers?

I normally go with the KLite codec pack. Installs all the codecs I need/use to watch vids. I would advise that you don't install Morgen Streamswitcher if you're running Windows. Has known issues with Media player and can cause Bsod's. Other than that, it works for me.

.... I'll try divx first and see if it improves anything and yeah, latest drivers.

Ah, there you go. KLite. I prefer those to divx drivers, actually. So +1 to those.

FFDShow is part of KLite as well...I haven't tried it on it's own. Will give it a whirl. Thanks Gnome!

The project might be opensource (FFDShow uses ffmpeg which is now used in Ubuntu), but that does not make the codecs opensource, since the copyright and such still resides with the company that wrote the software. This is exactly why, for instance, codecs are not standard with Linux distro's....

Actually they all use libavcodec available under the LGPL.

Many applications use it including FFMpeg, MPlayer and FFDShow

That is true, however if you consider this, only Microsoft has the permission to use codecs. Using codecs in Linux is actually illegal. Really screwed up but true.

There is a tool on the Combined Community Codec Pack site which can ID whats installed on your PC. Its called Insurgent.

Might be useful in hunting down codecs troubles.

Just thought of something when you posted this :p

If you are having a problem with specific media files you can check what type of codecs they use checking their FourCC.

http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Editing/AviC.zip

EDIT: Eh, you'll get a leech error if you try that link rather go to www.doom9.org -> download -> click the small full software page link at the top and then search for FourCC changer.

That application is used to edit/view the FourCC.

It can identify exactly which codec was used. For more info check:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FourCC

What like they patented the idea of a codec?
