Hi all,
My head gasket is blown on Mazda 6 2.3l auto dynamic 2007 model. I have been struggling to get quotes to repair, but have now received two quotes. The cheapest being R13.2k. Does anyone know if this is a reasonable price or can someone recommend a mechanic in the Randburg area?

I doubt you will get a quote far below that here in Randburg, that looks reasonable to me, it is a major job, but I have never done a head gasket before, maybe someone who has will chip in.

With access to a torque wrench ad manual you can do it yourself. But the head will have to be sent for engineering to have the bottom of the head checked and skimmed if need be. That will cost you around R 2k - 3k. Gasket and sealer about R 1k.

It's very labour intensive and the reason for the high price.

I can do a few repairs to my car, but think the head gasket will be a step too far for me.

Yea, that figure I would guess to be around R 10k then, give or take. Like I said, it's labour intensive and the engineering is outsourced. So I wouldn't faint at a R 13k bill tbh ;)

Thanks - just want to be sure I'm not getting screwed.

If you shop around you can probably save a R1k or two. But is it worth the effort seeing as you've been struggling so much already? Personally, if I was you and don't want to attempt it. I'll just pay the R13k and get it over with.

Whats your insurance excess?
Might be cheaper to drive it into a tree

I was given an estimate of R8k by another mechanic, but haven't been able to get hold of him for a few days. Was holding out for him, but otherwise you're right. Not worth the effort to save R1k.
