Mazda BT50 2.2 Failure!!!

Also you had a vehicle for 8 years, it gave you one problem and you subsequently thought what a piece of **** I have to change brands? You sir are a ungrateful idiot.

Happens to a lot of people, this negativity. Something small breaks and we would start thinking "what a piece of **** am I driving". Then get it fixed, then you realize it wasn't that bad. It's a combustion engine, things will wear over time and will need to be replaced.
Geez, I was upset the other day, my battery died in my car. I told them that I only had the battery in the car for 8 years, on which they reply, that batteries usually only last 3 to 5 years at most.
Maybe it's because some people think, when they buy a car, they don't have to spend a cent more on it.

True this.

I've come to accept my car is old and post accident its going to give me loads of issues but you still get sooooo pissed when the smallest thing breaks, and lose all hope when a bad noise or vibration develops.

After an eventful two weeks, with the BT50 standing open at Mazda. New Turbo and Intercooler installed. The damn things pulls really well again.

Innovations came to the party and paid for both the Turbo and Intercooler, plus installation!

Was so pissed at some stage i wanted to another vehicle and be rid of thing... I'm taking a long trip Vryheid this week, it will be the most proper test!!!

Innovations?

I'm curious did you have an after market warranty or did you pay out of pocket for the repair?

My brother has a 2.2 BT50. It has somewhere around 300k km on the clock( I have lost count) Regular maintenance items include 2 leafspring packs, 3 intercoolers, and 7+ turbos. I think there was also one or two manifolds.

The first 6 turbos were replaced by Mazda under warranty. The last one( actually 2) were by Mr Turbo(Or one of thise companies). Because of the history, they wanted to find out the cause. That cost them one warranty turbo. So far it seems sorted (holding thumbs) Problem seems to have been the dump valve system that would get stuck, then blowing turbos or intercoolers, depending which was the weakest link at the time.

The ECU errors reported overpressure. Ask Mazda for the history.

That was the first vehicle, a 2008, the second he has only had for a year and 50k km, if I read his post correctly. If a vehicle that new, breaks, that does so much open roads (assumed as he did 50k km in a year) then it's a shitty product. So I agree with him.

I had an extended warranty from Innovations that I bought with the vehicle. I bought the vehicle with the original warranty and it expired last year Feb. So, it was about R16k which included the TOP UP option.

It has actually paid for itself. As the bill was more than R25k and they claimed from both Policies. So, yah... Lucky me on this one!!!

It is really frustrating not to have a car for that long, however small or big the issue is. I use the car alot for travelling to work site and meetings... So, it was seriously frustrating. But, it's back now, I'll take it as comes from now on.

I have not received the full report on this matter but, maybe it's a learning curve from my driving as I changed from 4th to 3rd when the thing happened. So, I'll look into my driving as far as that perspective...

After the first turbo you should of returned the car.

No normal car need's 6 turbo's within 300k.

Interesting read so far, my father has a 2.2 Everest so I am always interested in potential issues to look out for.

The dump valve on a turbo diesel never gets stuck because it doesn't exist.

Not my car, not my problem.:)

It is a company car, and they paid for all the repairs. Mazda was just too happy to keep on replacing without finding the root cause.

So what do you call that thingie that releases excess pressure into the exhaust?

What excess pressure? If you are thinking of bypassing exhaust gas/pressure/flow that is a waste gate although there are more and more modern turbo's using variable vane geometry to manage exhaust gas flow over the turbine exhaust wheel.

Semantics. Whatever system is used on the BT50 to control over-pressure, that is what fails and causes the damage. Popped intercoolers and turbos. ECU reported overpressure and turbo company took that as an indication of root cause.

Will report back next week as to if the turbo has failed again after its first non-Mazda turbo transplant.

The above is my main reason (besides affordability) for not buying a bakkie yet. Reading the posts on the 4x4 community forum some of the new bakkies (most I almost want to say) have so many issues that I'm genuinely scared of owning one. Even the Isuzu has some latent issues, I've got a colleague with a new one and this has now broken down twice in the year he has had it.

Semantics regarding boost control aside, there is still no dump valve used in turbo diesels.

If that scares you, you will never buy. As that BT is paid off, R7k every 25k km is not bad.

Then again, I drive my Navara to 130k km and Pathfinder to 230k km with original turbos, and no breakdowns. Guess I was lucky, my brother not.

Just make sure you have a nice warranty and roadside assist.

So ****ing sue me for using the words dump and valve when referring to a boost control system. Bet you everyone else got the idea.
