looking around for a MB for a Quad Core 9650 3.0Ghz.
I have my sights on the following MB

Intel Extreme Series 'Skyberg' P45 @ R1450

I'm not looking at overclocking at all.

I got myself Hynix Module 2048MB DDR3 1333mhz CL8 PC3 10600 240 pin memory - any issues or would it suffice?

Rather look at something like a ASUS P5Q DDR3 board.

steer clear of intel branded boards. Just ask some previous owners why

What do you need in a motherboard?

I need it to take the Q9650, the DDR3 memory, SATA HDD's, SATA DVD-RW, Radeon 4950 Graphics, should have audio onBoard

Windows 7

Sweet and simple.

Internet and Gaming.

A R500 G31-based motherboard could do all that. Note that they're limited to 4 SATA ports (1 SATA DVDR/W + 3 SATA HDDs).

There are no Asus P5Qs available that do DDR3 to my knowledge? I'd recommend the Asus P5P43TD if you must go for DDR3. Goes for ±R1000.

The fact that you bought DDR3 means you'll have to fork out(/waste) at least R500 extra on the motherboard. And, DDR3 performance over DDR2 is negligible.

I would advise to rather go for 2 x 2GB DDR2 RAM and a R500 Gigabyte/Foxconn G31 motherboard.

Isn't the LGA775 + DDR3 doesn't have that much of an increase in performance

Compared to i7 + DDR3

IMHO I think you should stick to ddr2 if you going for LGA775

Yup. I would not bother with DDR3 unless you're going for a i7 setup:)

Sell the RAM and get a DDR2 board like an ASUS P5Q or one of the ASUS or GIGABYTE G31 boards if you don't plan on doing some heavy ocing. It's the better option imo

My bad, lol, I was looking at the sub R1500 mobos. :D

So for the P5Q3 you'd be paying R1500 extra just because of your DDR3 RAM (where you could have a basic DDR2/LGA775 board).

Still worth it, look at the P5Q specs.

1/3 of them..?

If one needed them, but the OP hasn't made any indication of what their needs are.

If the OP needs onboard on/off switch, Crossfire, 9 x SATA, RAID, dual LAN, wifi etc. then sure, the P5Q3 is great. :D

trying to cancel my order for the DDR3 and change to DDR2 800mhz, and should be getting P5Q-SE.

Thanks

I would reconsider as that mobo are losing this feature

Drive Xpert
Plug & Safe!
Without drivers or BIOS setups, the ASUS exclusive Drive Xpert is ideal for anyone who needs to secure data on their hard drives or enhance hard drive performances without the hassles of complicated configurations. With Drive Xpert´s user-friendly graphical user interface, users can easily arrange hard drive backups or enhance their hard drive transfer rates - making sure that data is looked after every moment, every day.

The p5Q Turbo and a few others do have the hardware Raid chip for backup.

external HDD's i could loose my PC now and would not give a toot.
Reinstall and everything in on the externals.

I would love the P5Q Turbo, or the top of the range one, but waiting a few month the prices come down drastically. I can wait....

I already have a 5.2 Windows 7 rating so i'm happy for now :)
5.2 for hdd
5.2 for CPU
5.4 for memory
6.5 for graphics & gaming graphics

what ratings do you guys have?
