MB Pro shocking

I would assume it is safe to modify the power cord then. I have noticed the warrenty issue with power cords on a number of items - not computer related.

Guys thanks for all the input....

I checked and I have the 2 prong adapter and then the funny 2 prong lead adapter. The 2 prong that plugs into the brick without the cord does not have a earth but the one with the lead does. The only problem with the lead one is that the earth bit is flat and you need a special plug for it. I am going to see if I can get a UK plug from Digicape this week or see what they say.

Cheers and thanks for the info so far

Seriously - just lop off the existing plug and stick on a SA three prong. I'm looking at the wires now and they're standard blue, brown and green/yellow so wiring a plug is a snap.

Never seen a single appliance where changing the plug voids the warranty. Knowing the bad service of many local agents it wouldn't surprise me if they tried their luck by refusing to do warranty repairs if the plug has been changed.

its the truth I tell you :)
When you take in the machine if something went wrong, they ask for the original cable and power supply ... Luckily I have 3 HP/Compaqs in the house, with one cable still in original condition, you know, for just in case :D
As far as I know, the local Apple dealers swap out the cord for a 'local' one as soon as the machines arrive. Similarly, the keyboard is different for diff markets. The UK one has pound key in place of dollar.

For me the biggest difference between the US and UK/Eurpoean keyboard is the size of the return key. The US one is much smaller.

OK
The iMac only has a two-prong plug.
But it is an earthed two prong. The earth goes into the metal hole between the prongs of the plug.
Both the iMac and the mac mini take a three prong "clover" connector with a collar, and the "two prong" plug on the other side. You can replace the power leads with one with a 3 prong SA plug that can be bought from most computer or hardware shops.

Hi Guys

I've been told that using the two-prong plugs will mess up my lacie drives and have been given shocks before from my Powerbook. So all of what you are saying makes sense. It now seems I need to change my two prong plugs on my iMac, powerbook and Mbp to three prong. Have been trawling the internet on a good 'how to' but have yet to find one. I understand that you have earth (big top prong?) then live and neutral but will the earth wire be there in a two prong plug when I slice it off and can anyone provide a step by step guide on how to do this (preferably with pics if possible) as I'm a novice at this.

Many thanks.

hey guys, i get shocked while using my powerbook. been like that for couple of years now but only when its charging. no idea why.

Are you using a three pin cable?

bwana - 2 pin cable.
Use a three pin one - the one that came with your MBP is earthed. If you pull off the duck head you'll see a round silver protrusion that looks like it holds the cable in place - that is the earth. :)

I had the same problem when I bought my Macbook pro and the guys here just said install a normal SA plug. After that it works perfect.
