No, because the majority of "black"* South Africans dont have internet and other media access (media on which they can give feedback/interact).

*I hate race descriptions. Just because I have a lighter skin than someone else, I cant complain? Welcome reverse apartheid mentality...

OK, why not change all the names of airports, towns, cities, etc & rename South Africa to Azania?

Then we'll be a 'brand new' country with no history at all.

How about that?

It's just a waste of money, we had a street called park street, it's now changed to some persons name, for what, how does the word "Park" affect anyone.

You mean like praising a baby for using the potty?:D

We don't have to treat people like children just because we are trying to be PC or polite. If they cannot govern, then we need to put people in who can. They are in the highest positions in the land and they should not have to be told how to do things or to "rethink".

True, and I'll agree with you that the government's generally made up of incompetent idiots. :D Eventually you just get desperate enough to take heart in the small things lol.

If you can claim it ; you can name it

My view is that you have the right to name something if you have built it.

You cannot change history with the swath of a pen or by ripping up monuments.

If you want to name something then you should look at building it.

Putting up new brass letters still leaves a stain on the wall.

PS. A building constitutes something higher than a kraal wall.

That is false, millions of black South Africans have access to the media (newspapers especially, and they happen to have more significance and impact than internet forums) so you can't say they don't whine because they don't have a platform.

Hey Angelo - I wish you would do some research before making claims - not that you are wrong or right - just that verifiable (or at least something we can look at) figures help everyone's knowledge base: here are 2 url's in a 5 minute search - please tell me where "millions have access to the media - newspapers especially."

Sowetan:
Average daily sales: 118 261
Average daily readers: 1.54-million
[source]

and here is a pretty graph - not the best (and old) - but at least something to look at regarding numbers: ---

This does not equate to "millions of south africans" - not for newspapers anyway - tv yes - but the rest no. And we all know (especially of late) tv is largely a government voice.

Yep, there is very little two way communication on SA TV...

Potchefstroom City Council Election Results 2006

ANC 28
DP 10
FF+ 2
ID 2

Very simple as you can see.

If it is the desire of the majority that lives there NOW to change the name of the place where they live to something that represents them then who are you and me to dictate to them ???.

Potchefstroom might have been established by Afrikaners hundreds of years ago but we are dealing with TODAY and not what happened in the past.

Perhaps if Afrikaners had treated others far better in this country then there might have been far more respect for their symbols and history from others in this country without them needing to kick up a fuss about it.

Now whose fault is that ???.

No use crying over spilt milk now.

Well I actually live in Potch, and know about this "majority vote". They had 3 meetings in Ikageng (the old township). At the one, somethign like 40 people attended, and at the other 2 there was in the region of 20 people. And guess what, not representative of the people of Potch (but that doesnt bother ol Tibby). Here the people voted for a name change.

The other day, they had a march, 5000 plus people, and guess what, there were even black people and coloured people there. They gave the mayor a partition with 17000 against the name change and 22 for.

So lets talk again about this majority vote huh?

This is on no one's land, and no one was moved from it, no sacred sites were trampled, and people were not relocated.

Pule Moloantoa, an old resident of Potchefstroom, who claims he was forcibly removed from Makweteng, the old location of Potchefstroom, said having the name Tlokwe back gave him sense of belonging. “It really makes me feel happy. I have forgiven those who took my property, but have not forgotten the pain I endured,” said Moloantoa..

Hell I say, go change the name of the old location of Potchefstroom, its currently called oudedorp, and its about 10-15km's outside Potch.

Hell this old times can go back and live there till he's dying day. Oh wait there is nothing there! Except a graveyard
