Actually that's true, Mandela was more of a people's person who related to the man on the street. Meanwhile Mbeki was doing the work behind the scenes as VP.

To all the people asking what Mbeki has accomplished: allow me to ask you what has Mandela accomplished apart from shaking hands and providing motivational speeches?

Look past the sophistry chaps :rolleyes: The 8million is to construct the house. They have NOT included the cost of the land, the security features, or (I think) the demolition of the previous structure.

And yes, if that mansion is only 3 bedrooms, I'll eat my keyboard!! (Unless they beleive in communal living that is :D )
 
Just wondering, will it not be the right thing for him to do....that is, to go back to his village, and spend his last days among his tribe/people/family. And I mean this in the nicest way

Well if it works when they tell the truth and present the facts! Way to go DA! Expose the frauds, even right up to the so called clean Mbeki. Wonder what else will be dug up soon. I suppose we will only really know if the ANC loses power which will never happen and then even worse will take over, The communists!

MBEKI HOUSE QUERIED IN PARLIAMENT

Commenting on reports that the government was footing a R22 million bill for the retirement house being built for President Thabo Mbeki and his wife Zanele in Riviera, Johannesburg, the Democratic Alliance said on Sunday that it had submitted a detailed parliamentary question to the Department of Public Works about the house.

DA chief whip Douglas Gibson said: "If President Mbeki is paying this out of his own pocket... there might be some eyebrows raised about where he got so much money, but it's his own business."

However, DA chief whip Douglas Gibson said there was no doubt that public money was being used in the construction of the house.

A press release issued on Friday by the Department of Public Works stated that the department was involved in the property insofar as government policy required the department to provide appropriate security infrastructure for the house, Gibson said.

"Thus, Mrs Mbeki's claim that this is a private house is inaccurate.”

"Public money is being used and, as such, the public has a right to know how much and in what manner that money is being spent."
 
I'm less than convinced that Mr Douglas Gibson has the right to march a troupe of journalists through the property.

Ask questions in parliament by all means. Invade homes - I have to object. Not much better than the lowest peeping tom papparazzi.
 
I second the fact that Gibson had no right to try and enter President Mbeki's retirement home with journalists uninvited. That is called trespassing you whining little ****.... Sue him Mbeki.

Secondly if you think R22m is a huge expense for a house in Riviera then you really need to get out more. Yes it's expensive and yes it is a lot of money, but not overly extravagent by any means.

He is the president of this country and as such has not been able to build a business like he could have done if he wasn't in politics. The benefit being that the govt should pay for some of his retirement house. Security MUST be paid for by the public. In saying that the house that he will live in must have space for a security contingent as well as be passed as secure. This costs money.

The fact that the DA made such slandalous accusations with no proof is disgusting. Rumours of gold plated taps and huge flowing baths was just garbage. The DA is just doing what they have always done, B!tch moan and complain about everything and do nothing.

pupa, you should be thankful the government we have now is free and fair. If you have made a post like that in the previous government you would have been thrown in prison. So what did Mbeki do for you? He lets you b!tch and complain every bl00dy day without fear of reprisal. So maybe when you go to bed tonight you can thank g0d for that.

This government gives us freedom, You are allowed to say what you want without fear of reprisal, that's something I remember not having 14 years ago.
 
Mmmmmmm, the DA really went to far with this one... He is the president and must have a house to be proud of after serving his term. The DA patroling around the property like that really dissapointed me. The DA has allot more to offer and can dig up allot more dirt than to make the public aware of something that IMHO is perfectly right.

Is telkom freedom? Is putting your kids to bed hungry freedom? Is learning under a tree (with no books) freedom? Is murders, rapes, AIDS, freedom? No - these are part and parcel of the world we live in - and much as we live in this world we live in a world of free speech. Why must we be any different from any other "free" country?

The nazis (re: prev gub) threw people in jail for having an opinion (what good did it do them?) People on all sides of the colour line gave their lives for freedom of speech - but someone rants here and you immediately raise the spectre of stormtroops - as if this is something we should be grateful for (or frightened, or appreciative of) - well F that - there is no freedom in a communist state - and the reality of telkom, monochoice, sabc and various other cartels is no different to then - so what has changed? Ooh ya, somebody ranting - well we're working on that one.
 
Telkom is freedom, you can go with MTN or Vodacom or Cell C or Virgin for phone calls. Noone is forcing you to do anything.

Ooh ya - telkom is king, voda, etal are serfs at telkoms bidding (read government.) I would think you fed your kids then - I am talking of now/how many go to bed hungry? MANY (unnecessarily so.)
