Mbete should resign, says DA

Newly elected ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete should step down as National Assembly Speaker, the Democratic Alliance said on Wednesday.

She could not be Speaker and ANC chairperson at the same time, DA Chief Whip Ian Davidson said in a statement.

"The conflict of interest involved with occupying both positions at once is just too great," he said.

Although she was not compelled to step down, the DA believed it would be the right thing to do as it would be a sign of good faith on her part, and it would be a way of strengthening the integrity of the National Assembly.

The DA's parliamentary leader, Sandra Botha, was deputy chairperson of the Assembly when she was elected to the party position. She stood down as deputy chair after a few weeks.

Now that it becomes a case for the conscience, we shall see how the majority party reacts. Or are they all going to attempt to hold onto power and to hell with the consequences?

Isn't too early to be talking resignation. She has just been nominated as ANC chairperson and the conference is not over yet. After all i never heared DA suggesting that Lekota resigns though he was the chairperson and minister in goverment. I think sometimes we spent too much time being negative about anything and we just enjoy critisising without looking at the history,procedures, and manner it which things are done or should be done. A suggestion for DA, consolidate on being a strong and an alternative for ANC and speak peoples language so as to gain non ANC voters like me.

Isn't the speaker supposed to be impartial? That's the difference between that position and a minister. Although she was obviously pro-ANC before so I'm not sure how much of a difference her having a title really makes in practice.

I think title or no title ANC dominance in the Paliarment has been impartial to their favour. There are laws that were passed without the support of the opposition but they used their dominance and ANC power to pass them. e.g abortion. The worst is that the president was using state resources to settle score with his opposers in the party.

No one spoke of immediate dismissal. But she must begin to make plans for stepping down.
