McLaren Speedtail

This McLaren Speedtail For Sale Is Asking More Than Double The Base Price

The McLaren Speedtail is a special creation from Woking and with just 106 units ever to leave the factory, getting your hands on one will be pretty difficult.

If you desperately want one and money is no object, you are in luck as this example is currently up for sale in Germany but don’t think you will be paying anywhere near the $2.25 base price.

In fact, the listing is asking for €3,990,000 (approx. $4,8 million) which is comfortably more than double the price given by the manufacturer.

McLaren Speedtail Albert by MSO

McLaren Special Operations (MSO) unveiled the 'Albert' Speedtail, a bespoke commission by North American McLaren retailer, McLaren Beverly Hills.

'Albert' is one of the final vehicles in the 106-car Speedtail production run and an homage to the first Speedtail attribute testing vehicle from 2018. Echoing the name of the 1992 McLaren F1 test mules, which were named after the Albert Drive premises in which the F1 was designed and built in Woking, England, the original MVY02 Speedtail prototype vehicle was christened 'Albert' as a respectful tribute to its three-seat predecessor.

The 'Albert' prototype vehicle was developed to validate the concept of the Speedtail's central seat driving position, testing driver ergonomics and visibility and rear-view camera positions. Originally built with the front panels from a 720S, the 'Albert' prototype was the first Speedtail to be driven on public roads.

The exterior design 'camouflage' was achieved by a simple two-metre vinyl body wrap with design lines printed to represent the optimised airflow over the car. The 'Albert' Speedtail carries on this legacy, sporting one of the most complex paint themes ever completed by MSO.

One-off McLaren Speedtail Albert nods to hypercar's heritage

Woking's 250mph hypercar is almost ready to bow out, but not without a tribute to its F1 forebear

A one-off McLaren Speedtail has been designed to pay homage to the first completed prototype of the 250mph hypercar, and arrives as production of the 106 Speedtails comes to a close.

The special edition, named Albert, was conceived by the McLaren Beverly Hills dealership in the US for a private buyer and manufactured and painted by the firm’s in-house customisation team, McLaren Special Operations (MSO).

The Albert features a mix of Magnesium Silver exterior paint, similar to the colour worn by the Speedtail's F1 forefather when it was launched at the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix, and Ueno Grey, representing the F1 GTR that won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1995.

The car also gains a unique streamlined-style livery to accentuate the paintwork. It took 12 weeks to create.

"As one of the very last Speedtails to be built at the McLaren Production Centre, it was very important to us at McLaren Beverly Hills that Albert honours the brand’s rich heritage, particularly paying tribute to the icon that is the McLaren F1,” said Parris Mullins of McLaren Beverly Hills.

The car was named Albert in reference to the name of the 1992 McLaren F1 test mules, themselves named after Albert Drive in Woking, where Gordon Murray's seminal supercar was designed and built.

It’s a tribute to ‘Albert’ – the first Speedtail prototype from 2018

Welcome to McLaren Special Operations’ newest creation. Commissioned by McLaren Beverly Hills, ‘Albert’ is a one-off that pays tribute to the first “attribute testing prototype” Speedtail from 2018.

Why Albert? Well – back in 1992 one of the original McLaren F1 test mules was christened Albert after Albert Drive, the road in Woking where McLaren was based at the time. In 2018 McLaren revived the name for the first Speedtail prototype – pictured at the bottom of this article. Originally fitted with a 720S front-end, it was the first Speedtail driven on public roads.

The new car’s Magnesium Silver (the same colour as the first F1 show car) and Ueno Grey (the same colour as the F1 GTR that won Le Mans in 1995) livery is a tribute to Albert’s camouflage vinyl wrap, which was designed to represent the optimal airflow over the bodywork. McLaren tells us this is “one of the most complex paint themes ever completed by MSO”, and that it took a whopping 12 WEEKS to finish.
