Where did you get this info - it is wrong. A calf weighs 30-45 kg at birth and puts on +- 25 kg per month. So a healthy 2.5 month old should have a carcass weight of at least 65kg.
Why would anyone slaughter a 2.5 month old calf and sell the carcass for R350/20kg = R17.50 - if you feed it to age 10 months you will have 6 times the carcass weight (+- 130kg) and can sell it for R4800 or R40/kg.
Something obviously went wrong with the calf you bought (if it is a calf). I strongly suspect it was a foetus or still birth, perhaps a sickly animal..
From New Zealand and can't find any local info: http://www.nzsap.org/system/files/proceedings/Hickson et al. Birth weight of dairy calves.pdf
Jersey sire at birth is about 27.6kg. Dress weight is about 52% of live weight. Spoke to a friend who mentioned that the current drought conditions could also impact a farmer's decision to slaughter calves earlier.
