I'm looking for a source of good meat in Cape Town, especially somewhere that has quality steaks (that don't cost as much as gold).

Any recommendations?

I'm in the Southern suburbs...

Thanks.

(Also, and I know this has been asked many times on the forum, if anyone can help me figure out how to cook a steak so that it's tender, I will happily hand over my first born).

I have heard they are quite tender.

good steaks that are cheap. hmmmmm sometimes you can pickup some nice specials at woolies...

Talk to the okes at August Deli 2nd Avenue. The owner James sourced so top quality steaks for me a few times.

Might be more than you're willing to spend, but Frankie Fenner's steaks are so good I try to get them back to Durban every chance I get.

These guys have a solid reputation, butchery in Gardens Centre: raithgourmet.com.
I'm very happy with PnP and Checkers in the South. Speak to the supermarket butcher for good cuts.

This works for me, we prefer rare: heavy bottom pan preferably. Heat without adding any oil/liquids until smoking hot. For 4cm plus steaks, 90 seconds a side. This is usually enough for us. Depending on preference, repeat of course. For 3cm or less, 60 seconds a side. I splash worcestersauce on the steaks as I turn them, optional. Sometimes a dollop of butter as well, equally optional. Use tongs to hold the steaks on their sides, fat side down to crisp.

Ye Olde Butcher shoppe on Main Road just after Kenilworth road on the right if you're coming from Cavendish Square side. It's a small hole in the wall butcher but I bought some steak from them and it was delicious and quite reasonable. Other than that, I can vouch for Frankie Fenner's but you're going to pay.

Ive heard good things about Bill Riley meat, but they in the ghetto and close kinda early on the weekend. Woolies has been my goto, consistently good.

Ah ok.. never bought steak from there before... only went there for mutton and chicken (just down the road from my family home)

^^This is the way. BUT, very importantly, this is most effective with room temp steak, NOT ice cold from fridge. Also rub oil on meat, not in pan ( as OP mentioned).

Well, not cheap, cheap, just not exorbitant (Is it possible to cook a tender steak without spending R200 P/Kg?, not yet, in my experience :()
