Wish I were living in Botswana, was un in Maun in December, all their beef is free range (tastes great) and the fillet is R40.00 - R50.00 per KG.

I actually found some Botswana beef at the local Spar this weekend. 59.99 for rump. I bought all 15 kilo's-odd they had on the shelf and it was pretty damn good. Might be worth a quick trip across the border every now and thenWish I were living in Botswana, was un in Maun in December, all their beef is free range (tastes great) and the fillet is R40.00 - R50.00 per KG.
I will never be able to understand the price of meat here in Jo'burg.
My parents have a cattle stud on their farm, these aren't commercial cows for meat, its a proper cattle stud. Every 3 to 6 months they will identify some of the less desireable cows and give 1 or 2 of them to the local butcher. He in turn gives them the equivalent weight in meat processed any way they want and charges R3.50/kg for labour.
All in all it works out to about R28/kg for them now for beef regardless of the cut of meat and it tastes a damn lot better than the commercial A grade stuff available here.
Well PM me so that I can buy some Mmmmmeat from your parents
I do agree though, the mark up on meat is crazy.
Hehehe, as I said, they basically just get rid of the cattle that didn't make the grade so unfortunately there won't be enough to go around if I had to start pming everyone
And I'm selfish, not having any less for myself
But still, I don't see how it goes from R28/kg processed to R100/kg, I mean WW asks something like R180/kg for fillet?
Whats strange is that I bought leg of lamb at Foodlovers market the other day. I paid their discounted price of R82 p/kg. I then went to spar right afterwards to get some other things and saw leg of lamb for sale at R70 p/kg. Either way I feel that was a good price for lamb? I guess it was the first time buying leg of lamb!![]()
WHat about beer though? Geez. Serioulsy I checked Millers (My GF drinks that, not me) 6-packs selling for somehting like R45 - R48. Even Black label was over R40 a 6-pack. I am sure a case was somehting like R140.
The 200g Spur Chargrilled Rump is R84.95 - I can get a kg of rump from the butcher for four rand more.Meat prices doubled in the past year!!
Its actually cheaper to eat at Spur than buy a steak and prepare it yourself.
I need to ask my local Spur where they buy their meat from.
Just got an sms from Boksburg Meat world:
Whole Lamb - R59.99 kg
Bulk Tenderised Steak - R49.99 kg
5kg Ass Stewing Pack - R239.99 p/pack
Chicken Flatties 22.99 kg
Legend Wors R39.99 kg
Till the end of the month..
Good prices except for the Ass, not sure I would pay anything for stewing ass. :wtf:
Bought some wors at Spar for R72.99/KG. Insane.
