WTF is going on with the price of meat in joburg lately?
I went out to get some meat for a little braai after work today and nearly had a thrombosis when I saw the price of the rib-eye the butcher had cut for me. Then I looked at the price of the other stuff I was buying

Sweet baby jeezuz, mary, joseph and the donkey!?! Have the cows in the country started their own strike season and refused to be slaughtered or what?

Food in general has gone up. Official CPI for food is +10.7% y-y IIRC.
I mainly eat chicken and haven't noticed any major price increases. Is it only beef that has been affected?

Every December like clockwork all the big stores up the prices by 10 to 15 % and all the smaller stores follow suit.

Whats strange is that I bought leg of lamb at Foodlovers market the other day. I paid their discounted price of R82 p/kg. I then went to spar right afterwards to get some other things and saw leg of lamb for sale at R70 p/kg. Either way I feel that was a good price for lamb? I guess it was the first time buying leg of lamb! :D

WHat about beer though? Geez. Serioulsy I checked Millers (My GF drinks that, not me) 6-packs selling for somehting like R45 - R48. Even Black label was over R40 a 6-pack. I am sure a case was somehting like R140.

Um.. farming is not big in SA anymore. ( And lets not get into why ). Less meat more demand for meat.

Towards the end of last year sometime there was a news arcticle saying that in 1998 or so, South Africa had the cheapest food, but we are 1 of the most expensive.

My father stays in the UK and he said that when they have a special on butter, it is 50p for 2 pounds, which is just over R5 for a KG :-( yet when you go to the stores they are charging over R 40 for Kerrygold butter.

Yet the food chain stores are saying that they are in the dwang financially ???

I realise that prices go up, but it just seems like there's been a big change in prices since last year ... expecially beef

Woollies were selling steak at R99 a kilo , but pushed it up to R119 a kilo in november.
Still there.

Lamb loin chops are R120 a kilo at pick n pay.

Pork is still reasonable.

Increased demand december, lower production figures last quarter, from reports it should stabilize by q2 this year, perhaps not a big drop but not a big increase either

Yup and you still get people saying the cost of living in SA is great, it's like take off the blinkers and see we are being ripped a new one for everything. From food to electricity.

Beef has gone through the roof.

I now only buy at selected places that will not charge me more than R80/kilo for Sirloin, Rump etc etc

Electricity is still cheap-ish in SA, as is petrol. nPower in London charge around 10p/kwh, or R1.20
I pay R1.

Next eskom increase though will **** that one in the ass.
Also I guess earning power here is a lot less than there.

Food and cars are insane.

Swine flu @ Delmas there is a ban on pig slaughtering at abattoirs. As for beef get ready for a HUGE increase this year. Supply and demand is off there is just not enough to go around. Plain and simple market behavior.

Where is these magical places in pretoria ?

Fruit and Veg food lovers markets.
There is one in Zambezi and one in woodlands PTA east.
I'm speaking under correction but from what I heard their meat is imported.

Prices of meat are going through the roof. I can get pork at a reasonable price because I buy directly from the Estcourt factory (Heidelberg) but I am NO fan of pork. I prefer my steaks or a nice lamb chop :D
