Wasn't sure if this should be in the food section or health :o

Anyway, want to try and move away from meat for a while. Mostly because of the kids. The amount of meat we consume is massive :o

That being said, we can obviously do salads and the like, or fish. But I have tried going of meat before and it's like an addiction. What can we replace it with. I know you get those veggie burgers and the like but I mean, do you have this meat replacement thingies you can braai as an example?

Nee sies. Replace with real food. Fish, fresh veggie kebabs and so on.

rather replace margerine with butter.

eat meat(beef, pork, [-]chicken[/-], ostrich, fish etc..), veg- includes chicken (cooked and raw), fruit etc...

and avoid processed food, and bread.

Buy from a cheaper butcher or buy cheaper cuts. Your kids need meat to grow.

How much can a mince lasagna or a meat stew for a family really cost?

Those big mushrooms make an awesome meat-like-vegetable for braais.

I'd avoid over-processed soy based food, as meat is likely healthier than that ****.

As other people are saying, meat is important, but in moderate amounts.

From my perspective, I'd suggest medium protein, and loads of olive oil, eggs, butter and vegetables. Does the trick for me.

I tried it once and found it to be more expensive to get your protein needs.
Also, not tasty.

Just for clarity

It's not about the price, it's the amount of meat we consume. It can't be healthy. I can gladly pay more than the R 3000 worth of meat we buy monthly. As an example just of yesterday:

Bacon, eggs, beans, scramble eggs and cheese grillers for breakfast at home.
Toasted sandwich at the canteen at work: Bacon, egg cheese and tomato

Lunch:
Sarmies from home: Salami, cheese, lettuce, mayo around 12:00
Steak and chips from canteen at around 14:00

Dinner:
Wors and Mash (Last night) Normally it's a cooked meal with either goulash or chuck, maybe steak or lamb/pork chops with veggies and rice.

The amount of meat I/we consume daily can't be healthy :o

It's not about the price,

Oh thats easy then. Just add more veggies, fruit, nuts, cereals, salads to your diet.

For breakfast have muesli with yogurt and a banana with your egg for instance.

Lunch can be tough but simply adding some dried or fresh fruit and nuts as a snack during the day helps or bring leftovers.

For dinner add more veggies, make stir fries.

For a braai a put a butternut, cabage, mushrooms etc in foil or you can make pepper, mushroom etc kebabs. Or roast mixed veg or mushrooms with a little fetta on them in the oven.

I'm not a big fan of the normal veggies cooked in a pot of water for hours type stuff but there are so many other tasty ways to make them.

Have you looked at the Banting diet ?

I don't get this meat reduction thing.... rather add to your diet then remove things.

Saying "it can't be healthy" is no reason to stop. Do a bit of research on the foods you eat before cutting it out.

For example - one school of thought is if you're eating carbs (potatoes and such) then stick to leaner meat. While if you're eating more fatty meat, then shy away from carbs.

Veggies are always good, and so is a bit of fruit. Cutting meat out however, especially for your kids, is not a wise move. Meat is a great source of nutrients, just pay more attention to the types of meat you're eating.
