Mecer Build Quality: Any suggestions?

Hi all.

I'm looking at upgrading my laptop, and I've been doing a heck of a lot of research. There was one laptop which has caught my eye, the only thing is that it is a Mecer.

Whilst scouring the net, I came across some forums that recommended I stay away from a Mecer. Has anyone had any experiences with a Mecer, and is able to comment on their durability/general build quality?

If you don't recommend a Mecer, what make would you recommend? I've heard said that Asus, HP, and Dell are pretty decent machines. My current lappie is a Lenovo. I must admit: I am impressed with the build quality, but the keyboard could use a tweak :)

Get an HP or Dell, best quality. Good value for money is the Fujitsu Siemens, decent laptops at good prices.
 
You willing to give up a Lenovo for a Mecer? :eek:

Stick with Lenovo man. Toshiba is also worth a look. I might have recommended $ony Vaio as well, but I cannot bring myself to trust $ony.
 
acer is all you need man

toshiba is not worth looking at, sometimes it can 2-3 weeks if they have to import the parts to fix your machine

the support for toshiba is shocking

The thing is, I'm not all that clued up when it comes to hardware. I know enough, but I never really know the difference between the manufacturers, coz I have never really used laptops before: I've always used desktops.

I would prefer to stick with a Lenovo, but the main issue I have is that the screen seem to be quite rubbish (all washed out and really poor colour displays), and they always seem to be bundled with an Intel GMA GPU that isn't worth the materials its made from :)

I asked a friend about their Toshiba laptop, and whilst she said that she was happy with hers, her battery went vrot after two years. As in not holding a charge at all. They had stopped making replacement batteries for it too.

I've heard that if you don't go for the higher end FS, you're going to be getting a whole lotta trouble, rather than a whole lotta lappie.

Oh yeah, andI don't now whether it's worth mentioning, but the Mecer lappie that I'm looking at is actually a barebone system. I'm looking at kitting it out nicely :)

What is your budget like???

IBM's use to be rebranded Lenovo's good product.
Acer also good.
Siemens/Fujitsu.
LG seems to be a good product at a good price.

Mecer well, as long as they have a support/warrantee behind them for the price I suppose it is ok. Depends over what period you write the costs off.

My budget issitting at about R10,000. SO I've gota at least some room to play :)

THe Mecer lappie that I found is quite a beast. It's a core2duo T7500 (2,2GHz, with a 4MB L2 cache), 2GB DDR2 667 RAM, 160GB HDD, Nvidia Graphics, No OS (I have XP already), DVD Writer, Bluetooth, Wirelss LAN b/g protocols, 15.4" WXGA Screen, etc. For about R10,002: including VAT.

So thesystem itself seems pretty decent for the price. It's just the build quality that I'm worried about, coz it will be travelling a little bit :)
 
I would go with a Dell - I've had a Latitude D510 (at work) for the last 3 years and it's not given a single problem. I recently got my wife a Latitude D600 and also runs very well. I also just bought a Precision M70 (D810) for myself, and it also seems to run very well...

1) Where are you located ?
2) No OS ??? Is this a new notebook. Where can U buy it?
3) Your own XP? where did you buy it from? You are going to have lots of driver issue's. Notebook's should have a driver cd supplied.
4) All notebooks always come with the Operating system already loaded!!

what eva you do do not touch mecer. When i got mine the case was brocken. stiffy drive wasnt plugged in. the media card reader was loose and faulty. the cpu began to overheat. it took them 3 tries and new one to get it right and i still have problems

This is a very good price for the spec's you are getting, but personally i think "MECER/Mustek" sucks nuts, they are a Wanabe's company, that has been pulling the wool over thier "victims" eyes for far too long. The so-called Mecer brand is re-branded crap from where-ever they can get something cheap (bottom of the list Chinese company's.

I agree with all the above statements.

MECER SUCKS DONKEY-BALLS.

If you gonna be travelling, get yourself a reliable laptop - I'm suggesting Sony, Toshiba, Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens, Lenovo.
