Spec for spec Mecer is more than a thousand rand cheaper than any of the brand names. But is it worth it, or should I pay the premium for a brand name?

I don't care what it looks like, just that it lasts the next three years.

I've seen arguments against based on online diy support and build quality here.

If it's cheaper and has the same warranty then sure why not? Yes you would look at build quality but at the end of the day it still has a warranty. You are most likely just paying for the brand.

I have set up a few Mecer laptops recently. Build quality is good and have not had anyone call me back with issues.

I prefer brand names like Dell, HP, Asus, Lenovo etc. though. Samsung also make really good laptops at a reasonable price too.

Thanks. I'm also an Asus fan.

Mecer process are too good to ignore though. Think i'm gonna get one.

my mate got the gaming mecer one and it runs like a charm. everything works great. I guess difference over brands is just build quality and look n feel. But the mecer one is solid and is v nice.

To my knowledge mecer notebooks are rebranded sager notebooks which are also branded as clevo in some countries. They generally have a good reputation build quality wise and a great reputation value wise so there shouldn't be any issues.

Afaik Proline is a South African brand and that the build quality on Proline is terrible. I do recall a year or two ago that my ex had a Proline laptop and the screen had to be replaced and that we were never able to replace it. I'd best avoid them where possible. If you are going to spend R8k on a laptop rather spend it on a better brand one.

Have sold various makes (HP, Samsung, Lenovo) to customers including the Mecer branded & have had no complaints thus far.
They offer great value & warranty.
As far as Proline i have not yet sold a laptop by them, but have had a few in for repairs out of warranty.
In general i would not recommend them, but thats just me.

Proline is out. I think the Mecers are worth the risk. I've only ever had Mecer desktops (since win 3.1) and haven't had any problems. I was budgeting 8 so going for a brand name is going to push me way over on those specs.

Both Proline & Mecer are South African brands.

Proline = Distributed by Pinnacle
They started out with importing components for their PC shops all over SA during the 90's.
Their franchise shops were called "PC 2000" & "PCS2000"
Not sure if they still have any shops, I think they now only do imports/distribution.

They sell all the major brads plus their own (Proline)

Mecer = distributed by Mustek Electronics
Another major distributor in SA.
They also slap together (manufacture?) photo frames and some other electronic stuff.

Also sell all the major brands plus their own brand (Mecer)

Mecer & Proline are both "clone" brands.

Mustek & Pinnacle have been fierce competitors since the 90's.

Asus is an option. The current lenovo models don't seem to have USB 3.0

The Lenovo Y570 has USB 3.0
I have one of these, considering getting another one or the Toshiba 3D glasses free, can't decide between the two.
Or maybe the new Asus G74SX, will be one of these 3 or maybe 2 of these 3, hard choices.
