Mecer W270ESQ/EFQ Laptop

I am just about to buy a laptop and have decided (after looking at all the other brands I could find), that the Mecer ones suit me the best. I like their keyboards, as they feel the most comfortable (I will be doing a lot of typing) and their pricing in relation to their specifications.

I had a look at the W270ESQ in a store the other day and am thinking about building one on laptopdirect.co.za. Are there any other sites that allow for this? I know I can also contact a Mecer dealer.

Is Mecer OK? From what I've heard, some people think they used to be bad but are now good, making trustworthy products and providing respectable customer service.

The aforementioned site is offering the ESQ as a barebone unit. Mecer, however, states that that unit has been replaced by the EFQ (better webcam and GPU). I'm hoping the chassis is the same, but the pic on the Mecer site leads me to believe otherwise. Someone at Mecer said the pic may be a mistake and that the chassis are indeed identical.

Those are Mecer's rebranded Clevo's which is good BUT
That model you are looking at is a HM76 chipset.... it is a generation behind,soon to be 2 generation's behind model.
It is effectively a Clevo P1**HM
Current Clevo's are P1**EM (HM77 chipset)
Soon to be released are P1**SM

If you want 17' screen that Mecer W370ET is at least current generation but with non changable GPU.
 
Tun@ - Also a lot more expensive, and out of my price range, unfortunately.

What would be the disadvantage of having an older chipset?
 
Nothing much that your going to notice but my point was that your looking to be spending money on an old superseded model.
Spec's are pretty ugly for the money your spending.
 
Am I correct in saying that many different, well-known manufacturers use Clevo laptops, including Gigabyte?
 
Gigabyte not that i know of...
It's mainly boutique gaming brands Sager/Horize/XMG/Eurocom etc to my knowledge
 
Actually Proline would be another local angle to look but last i looked they also had majority old models......there's some on laptopdirect
 
I reckon you'll probably find better value in a Gigabyte than chasing on that older model Mecer.

If your not looking for gaming performance
Look around for something with the integrated HD4000 GPU which should bring your price down but you'll gain in better specs probably
 
The Gigabyte's also HM76.

I definitely want a fairly decent dedicated GPU for medium-grade gaming.

Besides SRT there's not much difference between the HM76 and HM77 they're both ivy bridge chipsets and were released at the same time. It's not a generation behind the HM77 is just used in higher end laptops

I hear you , my point was more in regard to it being an old HM which by the time you bring it up to some sort of "decent" specs your in EM territory re price anyhow - eg the W370ET (is a optioned down P170EM)
 
I'm wanting to put an i5 3230M on that W270. Should make for a really capable mid-range laptop.
 
For what reason? If I don't do anything that requires 4 cores and 8 threads, why bother spending the extra R900?

Many (most?) games take advantage of more that two cores these days...

And you'll be more future proof. R900 is a small investment for that.
 
Fair enough, but I'm thinking I'll be wanting a new laptop after a few years anyway, and that R900 pushes the laptop out of my price range. It's 13% more.

You make an intriguing point though, as I've heard that most games use 2 cores and only a few modern ones use more.

This was the case about 2 - 4 years ago. :D
 
Oh good. So then in the sense that all the games that I play on the laptop will be ones from at least 2 years ago, I will only need 2 cores.
