Mechanical Breakdown Warranty

Thanks for the response. And how was the claiming process with Motorite? Did you ever experience problems ?

I only had the car for 5 months - the warranty kicked in a month after I got the car due to motorplan expiry.

Didn’t have a chance to claim but their admin department was shocking when it came to doing the name change.

Also have a Hollard MotorExtender policy for my car since Nov 2015 as well.

In July, when my car went in for its annual / 105,000 km service, there were 3 mechanical issues found:

1. Coil pack & HT leads needed replacing (misfire when idling or accelerating).

2. Brake Booster Unit needed replacing (intermittent vacuum boost leak).

3. Water pump, metal coolant pipe & main radiator / heater / expansion tank coupling hose (plus coolant) needed replacing (coolant leak from pipe / hose & noise from water pump).

I claimed for all 3 items & Hollard paid out just under R 11,000 for all these parts, within 3 weeks of me submitting all the paperwork.

My policy is only R 300 a month, so I basically had all my instalments to date refunded with this claim.

So yes, very satisfied with Hollards extended mechanical warranty policy so far.

Hi, i know its a bit late but I was under the assumption that you can only claim once parts failed completely and not when the car is still able to run? Also I thought you can only claim for one item each time?

Specifically related to that particular policy? Because I thought terms and conditions would differ from one insurer to the next.

The parts were all in rapidly deteriorating condition and likely to fail at any given moment, so as my car was undergoing its annual service at the time, I presume that the reasoning by Hollard was that the 3 separate claims (one for the HT leads & coil, one for the water pump & hoses/pipes and the last for the ABS brake master servo assembly) were all for critical safety & operational items that could lead to further mechanical failures in the immediate to near future, necessitating further damage & repair claims that would have been much higher than just for the items specified in the 3 claims I had submitted to them.

Oh because I recently did a service to my vehicle and they advised that the timing chain needs to be replaced and I asked them about my warranty and they said normally these companies wait until the part completely fails and then pay for the damages.

The timing chain / cam-belt, pulleys & tensioners are all 'wear & tear' parts that need to be replaced at the recommended time / distance intervals (mine is every 5 years or 90,000 kms, whichever comes first) and that is for your OWN COST OF REPLACEMENT when having your car serviced at its regularly specified intervals (a prerequisite for the extended warranty to remain valid).

It is ONLY if the timing chain / cam-belt or associated parts FAIL COMPLETELY in between the recommended service intervals that the extended warranty will cover you for the FAILURE thereof, otherwise it's up to you to replace them as detailed above.

I hope that clarifies the situation for you regarding your timing chain replacement & under what circumstances they will cover the costs (and when they won't).
