Mechanical faults reason why flying squad fleet grounded

The Mdantsane Flying Squad has been grounded after the crucial crime-fighting unit found itself without a single functional vehicle.

All the vehicles are rotting away in garages with various mechanical failures and tyre punctures. The unit is one of the most important divisions with its fleet mostly used for high-speed chases during hijackings and robberies.

The Dispatch has reliably learnt that some of the cars were booked in the garages for dysfunctional emergency systems including sirens, blue lights, radio and a loudhailers.

Maintenance is a key part for every vehicle to perform optimally.
 
Why don't government re-instate the government garages the apartheid regime used and operated so well? Suppose the risk is they'll risk being handed to connected individuals and used as spare shops for buddies to generate additional revenue for managers. Government claim to be committed to creating jobs yet they refuse to pick low hanging fruit like that, all it requires is ensuring that the places are run by competent honest professional people. The apartheid regime may have ensured compliance mainly through brutality but they at least had the garages working well and keeping government fleets of road repaid vehicles, traffic vehicles, police cars, etc working well. At the moment it looks like if it breaks it is discarded. Ambulances lie rotting, police vehicles lie rotting but the cadre keeps counting his looting daily.
 
The Mdantsane Flying Squad is one of 14 units which benefited from June 2017 hand-over of 27 new top-of-the-range fleet valued at R16-million.

So all the year old vehicles are out of action?

Some of the faults seem to be tyres and sirens not working. Wtf are they not repaired immediately?

The risk is that services will have to be rendered, people will have to be hired, cutting out the middleman and saving on taxpayers money. At the moment whoever has the tender is all too happy to get their money while not actually rendering any services and government is just too happy to oblige.

Incompetence. I mean a puncture they don't even have to repair. Take the wheel off and get take it to Tiger Wheel. That they cannot even do.

Again throwing incompetence at everything, it's not always that, it is government, no one bothers to make sure that everything is being done because you will get in the way of tenderpreneurs and corrupt cadres, getting yourself killed, it does not mean those guys don't know what to do. For all we know not repairing those cars and letting them pile up like that is going to result in another massive tender on top of the existing one.

I know the people who service the Cape Town Ghost Squad cars...nothing more than quality regular maintenance required.

Many of those cars have huge mileage on them and the fact that many of the first Golf 5 GTI's are still in the fleet says it all.

This is government, you can't simply nip off to T&W and have a tyre repaired or replaced. It needs to go through "proper procurement" processes. You'd probably be fired if you repaired it out of your own pocket. Corruption and fraud have necessitated these rules but the corrupt and fraudulent are using those same guidelines to perpetrate even more corruption. You'd probably find a tyre repair invoiced as an engine replacement and the difference pocketed between the service provider and procurement official.

I've seen this in industry as well, where one department signs all sorts of service contracts, even on equipment they have capacity and expertise on. And once that is done, they step aside and pretty much neglect their oversight duties, allowing the contractor to do as they please.

No amount of "quality and regular" maintenance will save a turbo car that is started and redlined from cold. That is what I meant by abuse. Not everyone knows that sort of behaviour will kill any car.
