mechanical keyboard

best mechanical keyboard?

Are they worth it
I reckon they can be - depends on preference.

Personally I prefer silent smooth keys with little resistance - sort of like a laptop keyboard. The mechanical ones are all about providing mechanical resistance so that you know for sure whether you actually pressed the button or not. Plus they are louder afaik.

IBM M series are the ones to get apparently. I used to have one of those many years ago...was too young to recall much about it though.

Re: mecanical keyboard

I love my Black widow Ultimate even though razer has a poor reputation apparently. It's way nicer to type on than corair's offerings in my personal opinion. Resistance from key presses is actually very light, it's more the sound and tactile feedback that makes typing more pleasurable. Also, the keys don't feel mushy or spongy like traditional membrane keyboards.

If I were in the market for a new keyboard, I'd look at Das. You can pick and choose switches and a couple of other things like whether you want buttons with letters on them or whether they should be blank.

Re: mecanical keyboard

Whilst I have never used one, everyone keeps on that once you get one you never go back. I dunno hey, none of the ones on the market really grab me looks wise. They all seem pretty boring. The one I have consider is the blackwidow ultimate however there are a ton of complaints about keys getting stuck etc but one day at the right price I might grab one to see what all the hype is about.

Doop imo it depends on your environment and typing preference.
What's nice about mechanical keyboard is the variety of switches with different actuation force and noise levels.

In a office environment it can be an irritation to you coworkers but there is mechanical keyboards that is more quite.

The Coolermaster CM storm Quickfire mechanical keyboard series has a nice selection of different cherry switches.

Cherry MX Brown 45g actuation force (tactile switch with Force feedback / low resistance)
Cherry MX Blue 50g actuation force (tactile & clicky switch with Force feedback / low resistance)
Cherry MX Red 45 gram actuation force (linear switch with Force feedback / low resistance)
Cherry MX Black 60 gram actuation force (non-tactile switch with linear feedback / strong resistance)

Steelseries 7G does it for me, black switches.

Have to agree with you!

I recently made the move from the BWU to the 7G and I could not be happier. The keys are a lot stiffer to press, but I like that. With the Razer, I was making far too many mistakes due to the light actuation.

But yeah, Filco, Das, those are the top ones. But to find them in SA? Good luck. Mind you, CM range is basically Filco, just some rebranding.

What is the best value for money mechanical keyboard with media buttons? I want to replace this econo-range Logitech with a mechanical KB but I want volume controls etc.

K so i have just received a special on the cm storm quick fire rapid with black keys or black cherry keys.

Seems decent but no back lighting which should be fine but hmmm i dunno.

Any thoughts, 700 bucks. There is also the black widow ultimate but that is 1.2k, looks a little overkill for gaming.

I've seen the Black Widow Ultimate retail for under a grand, so shop around a bit. Das ships to SA but you'll end up paying around R2k in total last I checked, which is a bit rough for a keyboard, I think.

Black widow ultimate was on special for under R1K. Now, you will not find them cheaper that R1.1K

Killadoob, The Quick Fire Rapid is perfect for gaming! Its by far the cheapest Mechanical Keyboard out there. You really do not need the USB and 3.5mm jacks on KB's if you are using quality sound cards, or quality mice. I think it is just a gimmick. But that's just me.

I found the lighting on the BWU distracting, even if you can turn it off, I don't see the point of having it anyway. One of the reasons why I moved to the steelseries.

Personal opinion, I would take the CM, and as you have stated, they are on special. Reason why I didn't get one, or the trigger, or the pro, was because of the red color scheme. Hate red.

I just recently got the CM Storm Trigger with blue switches and its by far the best keyboard i have ever owned! the build quality of the CM stuff is really good as well so i would say yes a mechanical is worth it and look at the CM kit.

Killa use search, plenty threads with lots of info and advice.

Can only but recommend the CM Storm Quickfire Rapid Blues, if you have your own office/personal space. Blue switches are loud. BlackWidow is the loudest though.

And yes, the Rapid is virtually a rebranded Filco Tenkeyless. Same factory. If you don't need numkeys you can't go wrong.

Have a standard Microsoft Keyboard. Nice feel to it and not that strange curved one

Well i bought the cm rapid black cherry, small keyboard no number pad with cherry black keys.

Tonight i will see if i wasted my money.

Postman i wasn't looking for information i was looking for someone to say yes i have this and that and it is way better than standard keys. I have googled and googled.

I bought the black cherry keys as i read they are best for gaming, then again opinion differs vastly so i will just have to see for myself tonight. Small keyboard without a number pad. Awesome actually, i never used the number pad apart from my windows login :D.

Just don't go an bin the thing after 5min of use! The switches are something to get used to since the sensation of their use is so different from most other keyboards, but after a day or two of using it you'll probably be stuck with it forever.

Wow. Another Mechanical keyboard thread :p
I've got a Razer BW Ultimate and paid R850 or so for it at the time. I haven't tried out other mechanical keyboards but I don't want to either. My BW is amazing. The ultimate is an overkill though, the blue backlighting is nice for typing when the light is poor, and the USB port/sound ports are only useful if you actually need it.
I code and game on my keyboard and the sound... well you get used to it. If you type like a machine it actually sounds pretty epic.
