What's worse, dieing or this thing?

Um, dying is worse methinks...

I don't see your issue here - not like you have to look at the thing all day...

If I had a choice between dying or placing a mechanical eyesore in my chest, I'd choose the mechanical eyesore every single time...

does it come with USB support so you can monitor it and do a firmware upgrade? :D:p

looks kewl!!

I would have it implanted, i agree stem cell research should not be researched as it can go either way and humans usually choose the dark way...

you don't understand what i am saying...

By dark i meant the bad way as in creating viruses and the like.

Well you know what? If they get treated with the so called "cell stem research" all glory will goto God, its just humans have a way of stuffing things up and thats why somehow i don't agree with the research.

If i felt God is going to feel cheated then he will feel cheated by a Mechanical Organ being placed in my body to replace the original organ.

That might be the case, but you don't know what you're talking about so its of little concern to be honest.

Um, WTF!!!!???? :eek::confused:

Er no! The 'glory' will go to the scientists who opposed your god and researched it in the first place. Why would he take the credit for something that his church says he is totally against?

And yes, humans are prone to making mistakes - why should it stop stem-cell research and not every other facet of science? You're spewing rubbish. If you're not opposed to it on principle, then how on earth do you justify this to yourself? Again, you've been taking science lessons with your [-]propoganda mouth-piece[/-] minister methinks...

Critics of stem cell research should do themselves a favour and go visit people who are fighting for their lives.

I think its awesome they've put together an artificial heart, hope it makes it past clinical trials so more lives can be saved.

hey just cause you don't like what i believe gives you no reason to throw all your toys out your cot and tell me what i learn and what i don't!

Stop making Stereotypes as you have NO idea what i believe, and neither do you care so stop as you say "spewing" your rubbish!!!

ok i agree i might not know much but what i have heard scares me, (btw i did not learn this in church i actually read this on the net)

so thats why i was skeptical.

sometimes we don't have to jump down one another's throats just cause someone said something you don't agree on...

Stem cell research promises a lot - unfortunately us humans will use it for both good - to promote good health and increase quality of life - OR for evil - to break down health and decrease the quality of life of a lot of people.

Ah shame, did we hit a nerve there? Need a Twinsaver?

You're basing your opposition to stem-cell research on some rather warped thinking - the mind boggles. You're afraid someone will make a virus? W-H-A-T T-H-E F-S-C-K!!!!!????

I can only assume that this stems from some propoganda machine that you implicitly trust - obvious choice being your church. And you're happy to admit that you are a believer in that particular novel that they preach. They are also heavily opposed to stem-cell research because the head honcho of the loony bin in Rome had a chat with the dude who had a couple of guys write that novel, and he reckons its wrong. Big giant head spoke; believers obeyed; no questions asked. It might be an assumption, but its merely because your argument follows their nonsensical opinions too - I just put 2 and 2 together. And being an atheist, I got 4, not a fanciful belief in the afterlife and its resonant, warped belief system that comes with it...

I can also refer you to countless internet scare articles on nearly every single possible subject - doesn't mean you should go about believing them or basing such an important opinion on them. And in any case, who do you think authored many of those articles?

Anti-biotics in the wrong hands can be pretty dangerous. Existing viruses in the wrong hands are dangerous (and btw, we don't need stem cell research to do any of this  ). Guns in the wrong hands are dangerous. I can go on but hopefully you've got the point by now.

agg DJK get over yourself and off your high horse...

Fsck that - I'll remain perfectly perched, thanks.

peder - open your eyes and use the grey matter for a change. See, I can also spew drivel along similar lines when provoked. However it doesn't serve to back my point of view, as you have so far failed to do...

@ phenom,
A lot of work has gone into research and development of the mechanical heart, and it would have been carried out irrespective of the progress in stem-cell research. Stem-cell research is still relatively new, and mechanical hearts WILL save lives while other research avenues catch up.

On the issue of stem cells.
At conception, the developmental program/software kicks in and a human WILL develop successfully if there are not complications.
Also, after conception, a totipotential cell is formed and can develop into ANY human cell including the umbilical chord, somatic germ cells and primordial germ cells. Totipotential cells develop into pluripotent cells. Pluripotent cells can be used for stem cell research, and I have no problem with researchers deriving these pluripotent cells from umbilical chords after birth.

There is also considerable amount of research going into reprogramming multipotent cells back to pluripotent cells. Recent advances in epigenetics has bought that one step closer. Scientists are only now discovering the epigenetic mechanisms of development.

For example:
Can Stem Cells Heal Damaged Hearts? No Easy Answers, But Some Signs Of Hope
Scientists Turn Human Skin Cells Into Insulin-producing Cells
New Method For Creating Inducible Stem Cells Is Remarkably Efficient

Now, if methods can be safely applied to create pluripotent stem cells for the purpose of research, why is there a need to alter human embryos?

Who was the first person to mention God? And why all the vitriol? I see no problem with scientists acknowledging God for their work. I can't help but feel that there is a misunderstanding that science and acknowledging God is incompatible. It is not.
