I have this strange problem that doesnt make sense to me

If I want to use the Media Centre option on my xbox, all I do is manually set my IP and subnet and gateway on the console and it works perfect! I can stream movies, music and even browse a few sites using the function it provides so long as my PC is connected to the internet. So that works perfectly.

However, when I enter my DSL username and password in the xbox so I can play on Live the media centre is then unable to connect to my PC at all. It gives me a network error.

So its a choice of using either Media Centre or going on Live. Not both unless I can fix the problem

Whats the problem??

Angaas.

Explain your configuration a bit more. is your ADSL connection shared via your PC or are you using a dedicated router?

shia lapa, angaaz!

I connect straight to the router from my xbox to connect online. The PC is connected to the same router

its kikaleza'ing :(

Set up your router to do the adsl log on, then you won't have to configured the Xbox to do it.

Well, when you enter your DSL username & pass on the XBox, it acquires its own public IP address, thereby losing the local one. That's why you're losing connection.

Ahhh makes sense. I take it theres no solution then. Maybe run an FTP on my PC and stream via LAN to the XBOX

Eh? If your router doesn't have any free Ethernet ports just get a cheap 4 or 5 port switch and plug everything into that and let the router do the ADSL login. Then you won't need to reconfigure anything and Xbox Live, streaming and PC internet will all work at the same time.

FTP? As in port 21? file transfer protocol? Used to upload files to the internet?

Okay, if you want to connect your xbox directly to your PC your PC needs to be setup as the gateway (using ICS wizard) but this has a drawback that you don't then use the router to dialup (meaning the router maintains the internet connection) but the PC itself (by placing the router in bridge mode)

Normal ADSL routers have more than 1 port for you to connect to, so just hook up the xbox straight to it and use it's DHCP to get the IP address you need.....

don't try and HTTP route the thinga-magik over a telkom POTS where there is no wireless signal or you might inadvertanly install the biggest xbox virus LINUX and then the intarwebs can be borked by rebooting the CPU running the RAM off of the gigabytes and THEN you're really ****ed china ;)
