The best build .
1 X Server , be it a HP Micro , or dual core self built machine that can take enough drives .
1 X RPI2 ..
EMBY and Kodi (openelec) . and thats all you need

I wouldn't recommend the Roku for local media playback, it's codec support is very limited. Something like a WD TV Live would be a better option for an all-in-one solution if this is your primary source of media. If streaming is your thing (or you have Plex server) then the Roku is an excellent choice.

I agree. I use the roku USB only if I have something I downloaded that I want to view quickly on he tv, although I mostly use a USB port on TV

You don't really need the server and the Pi...

Suppose not really ,
However it makes life much easier ,
I have the rpi connected to my TV hidden away .

My server i packed away in a corner and manages all my media content ,
Less stress on the server , and no need for a GFX Card .
So i have a headless server just serving that purpose .

Didn't think of it that way :)

lol trust me , It took me a lot of mauling over to get the right solution .
And the biggest thing was , i got annoyed with a pc having to be close to my tv .

I do have a mini ITX Case , but still . now everything is all nice and neat.
My server is completely automated. so i barely have to connect to it.
As it is at the moment , there is one thing connected to it , and that a power cable.

if i do need to connect to it , i teamview there .

The other thing is , i can now add more pi's , each of wich can add their own accounts .
meaning that they can keep their own bookmarks , and watched statuses.
I can also access it via any of my mobile devices. to resume watching be it from home , or on the go

So full circle question.

Messing around a bit with various options I'm basically looking at R6k+ for an htpc, roku and software. Doesn't seem to bad and I'm considering it.

I don't currently stream anything or use the likes of Netflix however as connectivity at home is up to ****.

Everything we watch is downloaded directly to the external during the day and the TV live has no shortage of codecs.

So, is there a similar product to that or does that tech end with the TV live?

Interesting thread. Also looking at replacing my WD TV live. Looking for something that is consistent and reliable. The WD player needs to be reset to often and often just disconnects from Serviiio in the middle of a movie.

Do you have an old pc ?
If that was for me, no, I've given my desktop to my in laws. My alternative is an old laptop that would need a new hdd and fans in an attempt to not sound like a Boeing. Not using my new laptop for this.

So currently my build is as follows .

my "Server"

Then i have the RPI2 with openelec installed.connect to my Receiver , then my TV

Oh and all the software is opensource , except windows obviously !.
So no need to buy anything, emby does have a paid for version \ or feature unlock ,
But there is really no need for that , as it does everything out of the box .

Me?? No? Running i5 3750K with 16GB ram , windows 10. Netgear router. Suppose it could be WiFi issues on the router.

HHmmmm....

Honestly dont know enough about the WD Player or Serviiio to really comment.
Perhaps check you application log's to see if there's not something it may be picking up .

I suspect the router to be honest. Since moving to VOX, the WiFi has been very unstable. I really dont know.
