Hi.. Hoping I can find some help here..

I currently have a Desktop PC with a Nvidia GeForce 8600GT 512mb installed. This one. In December last year I did a bit of a stupid thing. I bought a 550GTX. But my motherboard doesn't support it. The main reason I wanted it was for the HDMI to connect to my Samsung D7000 to use as a HTPC. It would be too costly to change motherboard ram cpu and everything just for the HDMI connection.

Here's what I'm thinking of doing now.. Buying a DVI to HDMI converter with audio output since the old gpu has dual DVI output. So the picture should be full 1080p? and should carry sound in 5.1? An adapter like this should do the trick right?

Please advise me if I'm going in the right direction.. Hopefully there won't be a significant loss in quiality..

Thanks

If I may ask why not just try sell the graphics card and buy one that will work? Are u stuck with AGP?

No but i'm keeping it for a later stage. Back to the topic, can the adapter carry audio??

Why dont you network the TV and stream over the network ??
Use plex or some thing similar

If it walks like a duck and kwaks like a duck ..its a duck

Unless its a duck billed platapus with a voice box :D

NVidia cards do not carry Audio onboard. It mentions ATI in the title as well.

I have one of those and it does not work.

Well the audio does not work, the picture is great but I have to get audio from the aux out. You should have other audio options on your TV though and your sound card might match that. Probably some kind of amplifier is going to help. I'm not getting 5.1 surround but thats not an issue for me.

Your easiest way would be to get hold of a 2nd hand AGP card with HDMI that sends sound through HDMI as I know not all cards sends the sound.

Or if you have an amp that has the HDMI for video feed run it all through it to the tv
