Media player for mkv's and avi's

I've always used VLC to play mkv's and avi's etc. However now that I've got a weaker processor (T4400 2.2Ghz dual core) on a new laptop, VLC lags when there is a scene with lots of movement/action. The problem seems to be the CPU usage. It lags when one core gets maxed out. VLC does not make good use of the 2nd core though. It's always around 10% usage or below. So are there any other media players that you guys are using that makes better use of the CPU or transfers the workload onto the GPU? The laptop has a Nvidia Geforce 320M GT.

Just download the package from Divx. The player works fine for me.

At work now so cant remember exactly. A newish version around a few months old.

I moved from VLC to KMPlayer & XBMC .... never looked back

XBMC is nice, but i think will be a bit heavy for that "lappie" - http://xbmc.org/

After googling a bit it seems that Media Player Classic is the way to go as it will put the load on the GPU. Will try that out.

Use Media Player Clasic - Home Cinema. It can use DXVA to offload processing to your GPU and lighten the burden on the CPU.

Works like a charm on much weaker setups than yours.

Use VLC you just need to set "Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding" to "None" in the setting under "Input / Codecs -> Other codecs -> FFmpeg" for certain CPU types that lags on MKV files.

Search google it is a problem noted by VLC on there website aswell.

KMPlayer! Also make make sure your codecs are up to date, I use Vista Shark Codecs packs

+1 for XBMC

for simple playback, download K-Light Codec pack, use the packaged Media Player Classic.
