I'm looking at getting a media player.
Basically, I need it to be able to stream content from my PC (over Wifi I assume) as well as play content from a HDD plugged in.
I would also like to give Hulu and Netflix a bash as well.
Nice, easy to use (aka wife-friendly) interface would also be great.

So I've looked at the WD TV live and and Roku XS.
Which one would you recommend?

My experience with the Roku XS has been a good one so far. It is as wife friendly as you get (I think).

I haven't played with the WD, but my colleagues at work are quite happy with theirs and by the sound of it it can do pretty much everything the Roku can.

In short, AFAIK, the one does not have a huge leg up over the other... I might be wrong.

In the interest of full disclosure:
The Roku is mostly used for Netflix, Hulu+, Pandora, Spotify and a few other internet based channels (Revision3 etc).

Even though the family operates the Roku quite easily - we still consume most of our 'non-streaming' media from a XBMC setup. The ease of use on XBMC is incredible if it is set up properly. The Android based remotes (Official XBMC and Yatse) - are awesome. The family are blissfully happy with the XBMC. (Sorry off topic)

The Roku combined with a USB powered HDD will come in handy for a nice portable system for holidays and travelling.

thanks for the feedback

How about a Raspberry Pi?

The Pi's work very well and are about 1/2 the price - with an Openelec or Raspbmc XBMC install you have a solid little system. I've given 2 Raspbmc-based Pi's as gifts that are used daily with lots of smiles and compliments. With the latest HDMI CEC support all you need is the Pi, Power supply, SD card with OS and external. You can control everything out of the box using most TV sets that support HDMI.

Edit:
XBMC XBMC XBMC!
(OK granted XBMC also takes a little bit of time to set up - but it's not rocket science).
