Media Players ?

well, i went for playon instead. since i could get them at members price via IT superstore here.

tks for all the inputs... i try it out then let you guys know. :)

I have the Xtreamer and it works fine... I stream all my movies from my pc and only when the PC get very busy, it will shudder?
Playback via USB HDD and USB stick is 100%
Haven't come across anything it could not play yet, but then again I mostly do avi, mkv, iso, vob,ts - your normal linux rips :)

Personal Review [AC Ryan Playon!HD Media Player]

Got this pretty cool device for coming two weeks... Decided to post some reviews on it...

Simple yet sleek design... Mirrored front panel with Power On/Off button on the center. The word "Playon!HD" right below the Power On/Off button, glows in blue... Any IR signal you press on the remote, would make it blink as a sign that it responses. The remote is simple and easy to use, the layout is carefully designed, having all necessary navigation mapped onto the remote. I would say ease of access, not too complicated for anyone to learn and use.

Installation of hard disk was quite and fairly simple... It took me about less than 2 minutes to hook it up with my 500GB Samsung F2 hard disk. The initial setup was pretty straightforward. Not much to set on it. It played all my files that I dumped to it from MKV, MOV, ISO, MPEG-4, FLV, FLAC and even RMVB. :D GUI is very simple, easy to navigate.

Looking at ACR forum, I found that they are developing YAMJ (Yet Another Movie Jukebox), and there is a trial firmware for it. I decided to go for it. The upgrading of firmware is very straightforward and didn't encounter any issue on it.

Preparing Playon for YAMJ was straightforward, thanks to its HOWTO guide. I took less than an hour figuring what to do and how to go about it (I'm new to JukeBox :p)

Running YAMJ on Playon was cool. Able to see poster, movie covers and a short summary of the show/movie rocks. Even now, my niece (4 years) could also play her favorite movie (it happens to be Bolt.) My girlfriend loves this new device I have... (instead of bitching that why buy this and that most of the time)

My Conclusion:
Functionality - 4.5 / 5
Design - 3.5 /5 (Prefer a much slimmer box and prefer USB ports at the back of box instead)
Ease of Usage - 5 / 5 (Good remote and simple GUI)
Playback - 5 / 5 (tested only on hard disk, yet to try streaming over network)

Cheers n hope you guys enjoi this simple review...

Atsusi.

Selling my mVix, bought an HTPC online from a mybb member. (AMD X2 2.7ghz with 2 gig ram, onboard HD3200 on an Asus HDMI mini ATX board, all in a coolermaster mini ATX case). Put a 1TB drive in it (R800 new), loaded Win7 X64, running XBMC (better than WMC). Total cost R2400. Playback is flawless @1080p.

Edit: Oh ja, got an iSonic MCE remote for it (R120). works a charm! http://www.isonic.co.za/toys.htm

hi IceOB,

I got it via IT Store directly at SGD $239. But then again, AC Ryan had a direct regional office in Asia, located in Singapore. Check their website here

They have also a new model. A Full HD Media playback + Digital Video Recorder in one device... Maybe you want to check that too...

Just to add, for people that might be thinking of getting a Zioncom QB100... dont waste your money! Got one Dec 2008 and its up to sheet. Takes forever to load if you have quite a few movies and series. Doesn't fully support NTFS as in the specs. Thought I would update the firmware, but now its stuffed. It got stuck in the middle of the update and it shutdown. Rather save money for a better one. Looking to get myself a Dreambox or HTPC now!

Isonic looks nice, but i dont see no support for it. Maybe missing it somewhere.
They have firmware updates? User forums?

Buddy has a Mede8er and it does all the stuff you need - I personally have an HTPC which does much much more and looks awesome in HD glory :)

+1 for Mede8er, I have 1 and I'm very happy with it... btw it's the same chipset as AC Ryan... but with local Support...

I've looked at all options and the Mede8er is so far top of the pops at R1599excl

the Xstreamer doesnt play HD properly

Isonic has some nice players as well : www.isonic.co.za (i think its R899excl)

The WD HD Live at R1399 doesnt stack up to the Mede8er though.

Why not? I still believe it's the best out there!

Just ordered Mede8ter, HTPC ill do closer to end of year.
Then my sister will inheret Mede8ter ;)
