looking for a media player for my room to hook up with my HD rdy TV. was browsing media players forums for a couple of weeks. Finally narrowed down to a couple of devices on the list.

1. WDTV Live (highly need a internal storage whereas WDTV doesn't come with it)
2. Xtremer - seems to be ok for 2.5" max. 500GB
3. AC Ryan PlayOn!HD - currently winning my heart as it will support YAMJ (Yet another Movie Jukebox), which its on trial

Any kind souls would like to shed some light on them ? Video performances / GUI / Warranty / Pricing ? mainly going trash it with mkv / rmvb 720p / iso files. Any other brands i should look for?

looking at AC Ryan forum, they seems to be dropping firmware updates on beta, offical and trials for users to test. the community support over there seems to be stronger compared to Xtreamer.

sorry for known nuts on media player - but what you mean on unicorn product ? correct me, i tot Xtremers and Playon were using realtek and the rest would be on sigma based.

Unicorn is the manufacturer of the Product (mVix and Xtreamer). All MPC's use one of 2 or 3 Chips as you have said. Its up to the Manufacturer of the final product to make best use of the chip he has chosen to use whithin their product.

With the mVix PVR, the last firmware update was in May 2009. 9 Months later and they have not delivered on what the product was supposed to do. And to make matters worse, development seems to have stopped and shifted to the Xtreamer line (which is newer). But it is wron of them to sell something that does not work as advertised. As for Sanji Electronics who are the agent in SA for mVix and now sell their own Mede8er, they just pass the buck.... Big help. Its a R4k dodgy device. Pretty useless as a stand alone device if not networked with a PC (If the network actually works properly)

oh... thanks for the clearer picture. after looking at the post on mpcclub. it was ick. terrible... so i only have two options, i guess its clearer now. but i do wish to have more opinions and options?

if you have the money Popcorn Hour C200 !! I wish!!! You can pop a BluRay drive in that thing. So it will be an all in one - Media Player, DVD Player, Blu-Ray Player. eish.. its nice!

BTW - the Mede8er is actually quite a nice device...

HTPC are expensive to build since i had one gaming rig, just need some media player (low cost, big in features) to play all my movies and tv shows :p

I've looked at all options and the Mede8er is so far top of the pops at R1599excl

the Xstreamer doesnt play HD properly

Isonic has some nice players as well : www.isonic.co.za (i think its R899excl)

The WD HD Live at R1399 doesnt stack up to the Mede8er though.

Huh?

the more popular brands are AC Ryan, Xtremers, WDTV Live over at the east asian side therefore stores sells them. easily accessible, as for the rest like PCH C200, mede8er they more like exotic products which you order online or direct ship which tends to incur more cost.

anyway looking at mede8er it seems to be same design as PlayON, only diff to me was the front panel.

My setup

Dual Core 2.5
4GB ram
1TB samsung eco green (low heat and noise)
Windows 7
Xbox media centre www.xbmc.org (has the best skins out there for HD TV)
MCE remote with TV tuner
HD 4850 Radeon
Single HDMI cable from Graphics card to Sony HDMI amp - HDMI cable from Sony AMP to 32 LCD TV (total cables 2x hdmi)

Uses:
Media centre, Games - have all my albums on there with full album art, all blu ray and dvd movies with full cover art.
Screensaver is an HD fish tank
check here http://xbmc.org/skins/

Only problems - having a computer in your living room (fans are noisy)
I'm lucky in that my garage is directly behind the wall my TV is stuck to so the computer is on the other side lying all open on a shelf (keeps very cool) and can make all the noise it wants.
Wireless receiver for keyboard, mouse and remote comes through the wall and sits hidden amongst books.

If you are not going to be playing games, any slow ass PC will run Xbox media centre

I have this...
Its awesome!! Plays mkv's, haven't tried the other types of files, because I don't have any.
It renders the images nicely. :)
