Mediabox's generally speaking

That is true Dolby but I have not used any of those. So I am giving advice from my perspective, having used both Xiaomi versions. :)

PS: Belligerence I cannot comment on if it will play IPTV.

I did use a USB hub with an Ethernet port with my Mi Box for a while. There was a stage where Xiaomi had some issues with their Wifi driver but that got sorted with an Android update.

Most people are doing the same thing

But I'm not sure why someone would choose to work-around an 'issue', as opposed to something that exists with the 'issue' sorted
 
Mi Box S , bought one 1 week ago and everything works amazing. I can only comment on NetFlix HD quality however, since I dont have a 4K tv. But Netlfix HD (1080p) plays 100% smooth on MiBox S.

I fully agree. Back then the issue was introduced with an update and fixed with an update. So should be fine now for new buyers. But yes you are still limited to a single USB port and no Ethernet out of the box. Guess we need to know what a buyer's requirements are and then it would be easier to recommend a product.
 
How do the Mi Boxes cope when you are playing high bitrate 4K video (from hard drive / Plex / Apple TV+)? I suspect that might be the differentiator from more expensive kit (Apple TV 4K or the Shield).

Well you can cut out a huge portion purely because it's WiFi only.

Even if you use an ethernet port converter, you'll probably looking at 90Mbps throughput

Just to comment on the IPTV aspect.

I've got it running on the Xiaomi Mi Box and the Lit. If you have a good provider (mstv has been working well for me, and a fast enough line min 10meg line and one app of GSE or IPTV Extreme) then any of the 4 main boxes should work (the two above, and the MiBox S and Ematic) as they all run Andoid TV.
 
I have a Mi Box and I must say I am not all that impressed with it. I find it difficult to navigate and difficult to download side apps onto it (such as CBS and Hulu etc) the only thing it seems to come stock standard with is the South African version of items such as Netflix and Showmax and DSTV Now. I am not knocking the box as I don't use it that much as it is in my bedroom whereas my Roku works like a charm with getting apps loaded on. I have had a Mygica as well and in my order of preference it is

Roku
MyGica
Mi Box

The only reason why I went to an android box from the Roku for the bedrooms because my son likes to watch Twitch and Roku stopped Twitch on their boxes. so he is happy with using the Mi Box for Twitch in his room.

I just found the mygica easier to be able to download apps and stream and torrent onto. Mi Box seems more like a casting device from your phone with some South African sprinkled streaming services. As I mentioned though I have not played that much with it and so maybe I am not using it to its full potential, when I had the Mygica I was forced to use it as it was the only streaming box I had at the time (It was the mygica ATV1960).

I would say for the vast majority of users, side loading of apps is a non-issue. For the most part you want a box that has a user friendly navigation system and if you want to install apps you want to do it through the normal google play store. Imho the MiBox S has all of this. The Android TV interface is very user friendly which makes it a pleasure to use.

I had a MyGica 585 and I was able to tinker and side load apps on it, but this was mainly due to the fact that the box was not google certified and the side-loading was a means to get apps on the normal playstore trying to work on it.

When comparing the MyGica to the MiBox S, the MiBox is a clear winner for me. The one caveat I do place on the MiBox is that I only watch 1080p HD. So I cannot comment on 4k experience.
 
They say the MiBox remote is very plasticky compared to Ematic etc?

The Mibox picks up my play store as being South Africa (even if I use a VPN) and so I cannot download the apps such as Hulu, Showtime, CBS, Disney+ through the play store (as it tells me it is not available in my country) and so have to side load them.

If you are happy with just watching local Netflix and Showmax then good for you but I want a whole world of entertainment at my disposal.

I can watch Showmax on my Explora and I would prefer to have the USA Netflix than the local one for more choice.
I thought my Roku was too restrictive until I got the Mibox.
