Hello all,

Another medical aid thread

I am on the classic smart plan at discovery and was wondering how can i save further

Any other medical aids with just a basic good hospital plan

Currently paying 4642 for 2 adults and 2 kids. Need to save more money :)

I'm not sure on the full Discovery line up but you aren't going to get much lower than what you are currently paying. It's only a slight step down in savings to the Discovery core series which is a Hospital plan only, zero out of hospital cover and probably not much less either at competing Medical Aids.

I'm on Discovery Core series and also wanted to pay less and looked at what was available and there isn't really any cheaper options.

This. You might be able to squeeze a few rands out by switching but it probably wouldn't be worth the hassle of doing so.

I'm on essential smart at the moment, and I am strongly considering cancelling medical aid entirely and putting the money that I would have spent into my bond. I have enough there at the moment that I'd be able to cover most medical emergencies, and considering that even with my son being born last (financial) year, I pay Discovery far more than what they pay out, I should be fine.

I'll confess that my human nature is a bit paranoid though. What if everyone gets cancer at once, etc. It's a tough question.

I did go by discovery coz if your pay is alittle then pay like 700rand so when i did get a new job so i didnt wys them now i still pay a lilttle maybe you can also do that

yeah sadly if you do end up in an accident or get some sickness you in trouble

thats why a bare minimum hospital plan is good enough

Here is summary email I got on Genises:

Private: R4240

Choice: R3080

Also get 3 basic dentist visits. Check their website for the details.

Also when I phoned them and asked questions they were extremely helpful.

Don't!

If you get hit with something nasty - you could very easily rake up R500 in a few months.
You will never forgive yourself if you wont be able to cover the medical costs to save the life of a loved one.

My experience with Discovery was not perfect but they covered 80% of oncology treatment and related costs over a 9 month period which was over R500k by that stage.
Without that cover I would have lost my house at the time.

This. Medical Aid is not a direct investment in monetary terms, but health. If you can't work, you can't earn, you can't provide. Also medical aid is not something you 'should get back' compared to what you invest. You also pay for others in the scheme as well as possibly yourself in the future. There might or might not come a day when you need an opp that cost half a million or not. Then you won't complain that you didn't get what you put in. It goes both ways.

@OCP and @RedViking:

Yeah, noted. Those are things I've thought about as well. I could probably absorb about 200k at the moment, though that amount will hopefully grow as time goes by.

But I still think that the whole concept of medical aid and paying for each others' medical expenses is part of what's causing such insanely high prices in the first place. It's a difficult game to get out of, hard to push back against the clearly unsustainable establishment.

It will continue like this for a long time. The only for it change is for the system to collapse. In the meantime you just have to ride the train or get off it and accept the alternatives.

My cousins kid got burnt by hot water, he has been in ICU for over 2 months, the bill is over a million rand. Full hospital cover, not the semi full like some of some these Genysys packages(Discovery also has some similar budget options) is the very minimum.

Sa medical aid rates are dirt cheap, go look at US medical cover industry, R20k-50k a month for family cover is not unusual and they are allowed to load your policy(ie jack it up hectically) if you have preexisting issues.

All things considered Sa medical aid costs are a bargain, thankfully.

Everyone should make sure you get gap cover, costs about R300 a month(it's about the same for a family or individual) and adds all kinds of great benefits, ups the modocal aid rate and min gives added cancer benefits and emergency room cover.

Who you suggest for gap cover besides discovery?
