Medical Aid

I'd go for Discovery, it's the largest private MA in the country and it's most liquid of the lot. They cover 1/3 of all the insured people in the country.

I'd go with Discovery because I've always been with them and hardly ever had a problem - and had them resolved fairly quickly when I have. Also, biggest fund, most liquid, etc.

Discovery. Been with them for 15+ years without any hassle, and I've claimed more than my fair share during that time.

Discovery.

Does not mean I get miff everytime I see that frekking debit order go off every month....and now that I need them for the first time in 4 years they dont cover the meds on my plan.

Appart from that they are pretty good.

Discovery, been with them for about 7 years, not once have I had any issues with claiming. Most recent claim was 230k 3 years ago and every cent was paid barring some R3.56 item that the doctor claimed, but was not supposed to claim for.

Every medical aid has its pro's and cons. As an example, Bonitas has better cover for pregnancy for scans and checkups, where as this is paid for out your savings account with Discovery. Bonitas will have better cover on some chronic illnesses. Of course these things come at a price so see what you're willing to pay and choose plans from each provider within that price range, then look at differences.

My personal opinion, if I'm involved in an accident, I feel safer being on Discovery than any other provider based on past claiming experiences.

Let's see here: 25(?) - 15 = 10
So you were paying medical aid and claiming since you were... 10 :p

Dad hasn't had any issues with them as yet.
+2

GF works at Netcare dealing with medical aids all day and says Bestmed covers more than anyone else. Last I heard Discovery is not accepted at any Netcare Emergency Rooms anymore, you have to pay private and claim back.

For real?
Furk me.. Dad has been with Bestmed for 10 odd years and they haven't let him down as yet. Please ask your GF what % BankMed covers.

Discovery hardly cover anything. Most claims come out of your own medical savings account.
Not sure about the other companies

Please ask your GF what % BankMed covers.

A medical aid doesn't have a fixed percentage it'll pay, each and every procedure/treatment/medication is defined, you'll have to contact BankMed yourself with whatever package you're on to find out.

Emergency Rooms are private practises not part of the hospital

So then it's not really a netcare thing is it? That private practice is not contracted in to Discovery. Once you're admitted, the hospital will deal with discovery. Lots of private practices are not contracted in.
The bulk of your expenses in an emergency hospitalisation will not come from the ER practice.

Funny guy.

Indeed, I've been on Discovery medical aid plans since the age of 10, first as a dependant on my father's profile (10 years), then on my own (last 5).

Have claimed more than my fair share in both instances.

I made an edit... You are correct
