My mom and I are paying R4200 (minus the R1000 government subsidy) just for the two of us for advance plan.

I am never sick and take no perscription pills and if I am sick I only use the hospital.

She takes perscription pills and uses the doctors and everything

Is there any other medical aid which is way cheaper than what we paying now and gives similar benefits for my mom and minimum benefits for me so we can save a lot and use it on other expenses which matter more.

So you're on GEMS then? If so I'd stay right there. If its a full med aid comparable to say discovery's classic comprehensive then its worthwhile.

Well we actually paying double yet we have to share the pool so we actually getting half the benefits as if we were on seperate accounts so I end up with nothing to be able to claim from when I need the doctor or medicine out of the blue so was thinking of finding a hospital only plan for me from somewhere while she stays on it which should save her quite a lot of cash.

if you are on GEMS, it's one of the best - speak to any hospital administrator.

what hospital would you usually use ? speak to that hospital's administrator (they are surprisingly helpful - & a hospital is like any other business) ask them about a good hospital plan for yourself.

having said all this, my mother has been in & out of hospital recently for cardiac problems & during all my visits i got to know some patients - the one's on GEMS had no problems at all regards limits / claims / additional services.

I usually use Pretoria East Hospital (For Sinus and Heart Op etc anything major needing specialists) or Medicity (For minor things like dental) in PMB. My heart specialist and ear/sinus specialist are in Pretoria/JHB.

I will speak to Medihelp and see if they have a lower plan or what they suggest.

Grantza, I'll admit to not being totally familiar with GEMS but at R5200 for two people, if I am reading that correctly regarding the subsidy, I would expect nothing less than full, total cover.

Oh we not on GEMS we using Medihelp, we would like to change to GEMS but how do we change to them?

You have a heart specialist but you claim to never use a doctor or any medication?

That doesn't make sense.

Cause the problem was corrected at birth and never needed medication

I only go to him like every 2+ years when I am in Pretoria, wouldn't even call that a regular doctor's visit. (Just putting money aside is enough to pay for it)

Are you on the Medihelp Dimension Elite then?

That is a traditional medical scheme which covers day to day benefits from risk (with certain limits). Many other medical schemes are now referred to as new generation plans where day to day is covered from savings, sometimes with threshold benefits on the top plans.

I always refer this site but I will do so again. Check it out to do some basic comparisons. It now includes the 2013 plans:

EDIT: I see you refer to the "advance plan", I do not see this listed for Medihelp.

Yep it is the dimension elite couldn't remember the name

GEMS is good yes but cant go on it if you are not employed by the GOV - or obviously direct family of a GOV employee - I would touch anything but Discovery - you just need to understand the plans vs requirements

My mom worked for a government hospital for 30 years does that qualify?

Nope she got medical boarded then a private lab asked her to come work for them.

We only paying 1k a month now instead of 5k for full cover on Emerald :D.

If you are paying 1k a month now how on earth do you expect to get away cheaper somewhere else for the same benefits?

You are looking at R1200 for yourself alone on other options with less benefits.

Thats on GEMS so not sure what you mean when we paying 4k less for the same and actually sometimes even better benefits.

In Medihelp you had to still pay for your medicine/doctor visits after medical aid rates, but with GEMS you pay nothing so R0 when you get medicine/doctor visits.

Doesn't really matter either way.

If your medical aid is costing only R1000 a month for two people it's a bargain.

Thread was necro'd. Obviously they made a plan.
