Any thoughts on Mefliam? I read the hectic possible side effects and also saw some crazy stuff on the internet. Anyone has personal experiences with it.

Will be going to Kruger this weekend, got it from my Doctor today. I know they say you must take it a week before, but we only decided to go today.

Did anyone experience any hectic side effects?

I am totally allergic to Larium (also mefloquine based). Sends me into major depression after a couple of weeks. Bad news for the family.

Oh ****... I've read a bit about it, I don't think I have ever seen meds that are so controversial. LOL, but I guess at the end of the day it's better to try and avoid the malaria and deal with the other stuff than the other way around?

I am not a doctor, but from past experience and living that side, the doctors always recommended leaving the meds and just keeping an eye on yourself. Granted, this was 10 years ago - so things might have changed, but the general consensus was that the meds mask malaria symptoms, making you much worse at the end of the day if the meds don't work as expected.

I used to live in Skukuza, and did not know of anyone who took meds. Granted, a few people did get malaria, but as soon as you feel slightly sick we would go for a test. If picked up early it's extremely simple to treat - the trick is you have to catch it early. It can kill you in 2 days so it does need to be taken seriously.

Speak to your doctor, and if he isn't sure - phone the one in the area, it's a common question and they will give you proper advise.

I have used Mefliam in quite a few occasions, had no side effects at all.

Its the one with the most side effects in my experience especially with woman.

Im fine on it but I rather take Malarone although its more expensive they also have a generic now.

I have to drink it in the morning (once a week), if I drink it anytime after 12 midday I have the wildest dreams. Otherwise I detect no influence in taking it.

I have been on and off mefliam for the past 2years, after continuous use you would probably need to get a liver function test done. Mefliam is taken once a week. and i personally havent had any issues with it.

I've never had such mixed reactions to a drug... (not just from feedback on here). From severe effects, to no effects, to best thing ever to it masks the symptoms which is bad for you and so on. Well I took one on Tuesday, I have felt a BIT more tired than usual, but nothing else. Don't know... all I know is we definitely a better action plan against malaria.

Hi werfie.

How did it go after taking the pills? Doctor prescribed the same for us and I am just reading up a bit on it.

Any side effects are minor compared to actually getting and dying from Maleria.

Colleague of mine passed away two years ago from being stupid and not wanting to take the drugs.

When I started taking it I couldn't sleep for 36 hours or so and afterwards during the entire period I had some very wacky dreams twice a week or so. It wasn't horrible, but next time I'll try a different one. There's a cheaper medication can't remember the name now, the tabs cost like R1.50 each or something and you have to take one each day, I'll try it next time.

Doxycycline

Doxycycline

I usually use this when up in Zambia. 100mg / day. No issues except the one time I took it before breakky and I ended up so nauseous I almost puked up my bacon and eggs.

I've used Mefliam without any issues but have seen someone who got extremely aggressive whilst on Mefliam and once he switched to doxy the aggression disappear.
