So while I'm upgrading my laptop's harddrive, I thought I'd take a look and see how much some extra ram would cost - and it's surprisingly cheap. So I might go ahead and get some at the same time.

The catch is that I have two slots, and both are filled - Dell gave me 2 x 256Mb, rather than 1 x 512Mb. I know that there used to be rules about mixing memory module sizes - could I replace one of the 256Mb's with a 512Mb or even a 1024Mb? The speed should be the same (and even it wasn't, it would just default down to the slowest speed anyway).

I'd go for 2x512's or 2x1024's - the more, the better.

And the more RAM you have, the less wear and tear there'll be on your HDD.

Also, you can mix and match RAM, but it is Not Recommended. Rather put in two of the same size.

But, before you rush out to buy the RAM, find out first what type of RAM yours will support so that you buy the correct RAM.
