Hi There

I had 2 x 512Mb Aeneon DDR 800 modules in my system...but I decided to add another 2... Problem is that after I added the 2 new modules my system gave me various problems like blue screens (Stop 0x0000008E) and freezing problems etc. If I test/use the pairs separetly they work fine..but as soon as I combine the 2 pair I get system problems. Any ideas

AMD Athlon 64 3600+ X2
Asus M2V Motherboard

Are you adding it by color? Your motherboard should be dual channel, so just put two pairs in the same color etc.

Make sure both pairs you insert are either two of the same kind, double sided, or single sided, keep them together ;)

The ram chips should either be on one side or on both sides of the ram module, if they are mixed it won't work.

Not necessarily, some mobos have it mapped so that DIFFERENT colour slots will give you dual channel, best to check the manual. Also some motherboards are anal about 4 stick, if you really want 2 Gigs of RAM, get a 2x1GB kit (of reliable RAM like corsair or OCZ).

Maybe try a Bios update aswell, most the AM2 motherboard have had ram issues from what I've seen

As a last resort yes...coz if it ain't broke don't fix it :). First check the details of the new bios and what improvements have been made, no use risking the flash if the new bios has no update for RAM compatibility. ;)

Modules are in correct banks and they are all exactly the same type/brand/model..and I even tried switching them around

Got the latest Bios update

I know, but asus did not at all specify what the latest bios update does.

Wow, you learn something new everyday, I thought my pc was like everyone elses :p lol :D Thanks for correcting me ;)

RAM compatability gives a lot of problem like this.. If a BIOS update or checking the manual for placement doesn't work, then it most likely never will.

Try different RAM if you can take the others back. Otherwise 2X1GB will be best.

Had a similar issue with my Gigabyte 939 board and AMD 4800 X2 - had 2x 1GB Samsungs, then added another 2 of the same - result was the same as you - random crashes to BSOD, XP would not boot past a certain point, etc.

Eventually re-installed XP on a spare HDD to check if this would work and it did - not sure why or how, but it did... when I changed my memory again to 2 matched pairs of Kingston HyperX modules, I had to do the same again...

...my suggestion - if you have a spare HDD, try and do a reinstall of XP and see if that helps...

Tried that..no luck

OK...maybe I'm just freaking out a bit but if I buy a 4 slice toaster I would expect to toast 4 slices of bread at once irrispective of the type of bread I use or whatever...

Same goes with the idea when some goes out and buys a motherboard. They buy a 4 ram slot board with future upgrades in mind...

And my configuration is pretty standard..

AMD Dual core (DDR 800 support) + 4 x Clone brand name DDR 800 Modules...

 PC just aint as cool as they where in the old days

Try slowing your RAM down a bit and see what happens. Would be interesting to note.

Like bring it down from Turbo to fast if its on auto and depending on your BIOS. Or increase CAS latency a bit like from 2 to 2.5 or 3. Those always kill the memory crashes I have.

I had a similar problem but it only happened when I activated dual mode. For some reason the Motherboard detected the RAM latencies incorrectly. After I manually forced it to the correct timings (as from the RAM supplier site) it's running without any problems.

Maybe you should try to force the timings since all the modules are similar.

That might help I agree...but what about the standard guy who has no knowlegde of Timings etc... They make these things really crap to set up. What happend to days of just popping in the modules and smiling
