I have the option to get 8gig ddr2 800 ie 4 by 2gig chips, will it be worth it for rendering purposes in 3ds max ?

Presently running 3gig, XP pro 64 bit in case people want to mention windows :p

mobo ds3 which the manual says can handle up to 8gig.

Any responses will be appreciated :)

I wouldn't necessarily say it'll be worth your money, but if you've got money to burn go for it ;)

Not sure whether 8GB would be faster then 4GB, but it might help.

I think you should rather buy 4GB and use the rest for a better CPU.

Unless 3DS Max can use GPUs for rendering these days, in which case you should rather invest in 2 top-of-the-range SLI cards...

wise words from the JUGster - play around with your VM settings too

You already have a decent CPU and motherboard. 4gb of ram should be more than efficient but do as Juggy said, don't know how big your projects are

so 50 50, all ram and virtual memory gets used, 15k frame avi's being rendered (with the quad sometimes 2 at a time). Not got money to burn as such but at the prices nowadays it is a steal i should think.

Thanks to all who responded :)

OK, so do this. Set no page file and then adjust the ammount of memory you need. Solid state ram will render much faster than reading from a virtual memory file on your hard disk.

lol page file on raptor which helps a bit though obviously not enough, great for gaming though :)

Get QX6850 and change your name to QX6850 rules :P
seriously though I'm not sure if 8GB will do much for you, but maybe tis the only thing you can really upgrade right now, or you could opt for a Quadro card

GPU does not seem to help with rendering in Max (open for correction) using normal max rendering software, there may be some 2nd party party softwares that do make use of the GPU (nvidia/gelato sucks in every test i have run so far).

As for QX6850 shall see the prices when they are released though i doubt i will go that way, bank accounts do not grow on trees otherwise i would go with dual xeons (53xx series) but then again maybe i should wait for Barcie if it ever gets released :p

p.s. where the heck did you get a 6850 from ?

Now I could tell you but then there'd be a black van outside your place and they'd throw you inside and you'd never be heard from again...

Well there are plug ins and special profiles on Quadro cards that accelerate work in Maya 3DSMax etc...
