Hi, i have a inlaw who took drugs (Kat) and had a mental breakdown, he has not gotten better in the past 2 years. He was a perfectly normal person in society, and now he can't answer questions, has trouble with sleep, forgets things that happened 5 minutes ago, has anger issues, sleeping issues, we were scared to take him to get psychiatric help because we thought he might get locked up in a mental institute due to them finding out he cannot conform to societies norms.

Is there anyone who can assist in this matter?

Thanks

Do you really want to help your family member? Or are you scared people will find out that a family member is mentally ill? The reason I ask is that I have come across a similar situation where the family were two minded. Some family memebers wanted to get help for the person and the others insisted there was nothing wrong to the detriment of the person. They were more scared about what would people think (I know).

What is wrong with him being sectioned for his own good?

Unfortunately, the "what will people think" syndrome drives really weird behaviour in families. The right thing to do IS precisely that -- institutionalised for concentrated re-habilitation.

Can he be committed even if he's not a danger to self or others? I'd think he can referred to a day clinic

I really don't care what my family thinks, wr more worried about that "what if" he gets locked up in mental institute for life.

He thinks his perfectly healthy and that he never do drugs. So it's really difficult to help him. But i really want him to get his life back.

Sounds like he needs a proper psychiatric evaluation to determine the extent of the damage and whether it's reversible or not. This is a common occurrence amongst heavy drug users. First get an evaluation and thereafter advice on how to proceed further. Sometimes alot of money and time is wasted on these camps etc. Especially when there is no indication as they are not applicable for said patients needs.

Nope. Methcathinone.
That stuff is also called Khat if its the plant based variety, similar effects as meth?

The effects of extended misuse seem to have potential for some pretty serious mental issues. Not sure about why the op's inlaw is so severe and long term, normally once the addiction is sorted people largely return to their previous selves with some caveats.

It's kind hearted to want to help someone you love especially when their actions affect everyone around them. Unless he wants to do better it's very difficult for him to get better even with the best treatment. If he is experiencing Psychosis or is a danger to himself or others it is your responsibility to ensure that they are treated by a mental health professional even if he is committed.

It is very unlikely that he'll be involuntarily committed so don't worry about that.

That sounds fairly typical of vast numbers of our society.

If you do ever send him to a rehab, please do NOT goto noupoort, had a friend who went there; it is hell on earth for anyone recovering. They really get treated like dirt. (This was about 10 years ago, so it might have changed)

Unfortunately they are probably the only place that actual delivers results.
